PUB 520 Rasmussen College Dementia In The Aging Population Research Paper Choose a health issue or problem pertinent to a specific population experiencing a health disparity. In a 1,500-1,750 word paper, discuss the factors that contribute to the health issue, identify a theory or model that relates to the health issue, and propose a health promotion intervention to improve health outcomes. You may use any relevant resources from your Annotated Bibliography from Topic 5 for support. Include the following components:

Introduction: Identify and describe the health issue you are addressing and the population affected. Provide a concise synopsis of the purpose of the paper and a general introduction to the target population and the health issue.
Relationship Between Health Issue and Target Population: Provide a description about the target population that you have selected, including demographic information about the population. Describe the health issue in relation to the population you chose.
Contributing Factors/Social Determinants of Health: Describe the reasons or causes for the health issue. Analyze how social, cultural, behavioral, and psychological factors contribute to the health issue among this population, and the health disparity experienced by the population. Evaluate structural bias, social inequities, and racism that undermine health and create health inequity among this population. Describe under which level of interaction these causes and contributing factors fall: intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, or all three.
Theory or Model: Identify the theory or model that best explains the behaviors associated with the health issue selected, as well as best matches the level of interaction for contributing factors. Discuss how this theory or model applies to the health issue you are addressing and provide a rationale for choosing this theory. Describe examples of how this theory has been used successfully in the research literature.
Conclusion: Describe health promotion strategies or behavior change strategies to reduce health disparities and health inequity related to the health issue among this population.

The health disparity chosen is dementia in the aging population. Dementia is a chronic
illness that causes memory disorientation, poor language skills, and other cognitive declines. It
occurs when the brain cells are damaged. The elderly population is at a higher risk of developing
dementia due to the underlying problems that are associated with aging. I will research this topic
using the following resources:
Al-Zahrani, J. (2019). Prevention of dementia in the elderly population: A comprehensive
review of the literature. Annals of Indian Psychiatry. 3. 14. 10.4103/aip.aip_60_18.
The authors define dementia as the loss of cognitive capabilities that interfere with
someone’s ability to lead a normal life. The article aim is to summarize the medical interventions
for preventing cognitive impairment. The article suggests that a healthy dieting can be used to
prevent dementia. This involves eating responsibly to avoid cardiovascular diseases. Doctors can
also use both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment approaches. Nonpharmacological treatment involves therapy sessions, where the elderly persons can be advised
on how to manage their diet, and lead healthy lives to reduce the risks. It also involves
encouraging physical activities to keep the body fit. Social engagement and cognitive training
could also be effective approaches of reducing the risk of developing dementia. The authors
conclude that the type of lifestyle one adopts has a big influence on how healthy they are.
Therefore, advising elderly people on how to lead a healthy lifestyle such as healthy eating,
physical activities, and social interaction should be considered.

The purpose of this article is to address the various characteristics of dementia in the
eldest population, risk factors, and management of the same. The authors state that group of 90
years and above continue to increase due to the health awareness and availability of health
services. According to the US Census Bureau 2010 analysis, among the elderly people of the age
of 65 and above, 4. 7% were of 90 years and above. The bureau projects this to reach 9.9% by
2050. The population is, however, is in higher risk of developing dementia than any other age
group. Authors state that dementia is more prevalent in women (45%) than men (28%) according
to their research findings. This age difference is because women live longer than men. Age is a
high determinant of dementia. The article states that low blood pressure causes a high risk of
developing dementia in old age. Also, heart problems cause dementia when the blood vessels
stiffness and lose their elasticity, which causes cerebral hypoperfusion. Authors state that
dementia can be diagnosed through testing of cognitive performance to detect any impairments.
They offered treatment methods as nonpharmacologic interventions such as therapy. If
pharmacologic treatment is administered, then close monitoring and reassessment of the
effectiveness of the treatment are inevitable.
Kravitz, E., Schmeidler, J., & Beeri, M. (2012). Cognitive Decline and Dementia in the
Oldest-Old. Rambam Maimonides medical journal. 3. e0026. 10.5041/RMMJ.10092.
The author states that the oldest old population is increasing at a high rate. The aim of the
article is to identify the factors causing dementia in the oldest old. This age group is at a higher
risk of developing dementia than other populations. The authors state that dementia contributes
to cognitive failure and could inhibit neuropsychological valuations. The authors summarise the
risk factors for dementia as age, estrogen therapy, genes, physical activity, and lifestyle.
Dementia patients are mostly women because they have a higher chance of surviving. Also, the

decrease in estrogen increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer disease (AD). Lack of
physical activity causes people to develop diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which pose a
higher chance of developing dementia in the future. Also, lifestyle such as smoking or alcohol
consumption also increases the chances of dementia.
