Assignment 1: Research Proposal (15%)
Note: Remember to read Chapter 10 of the textbook (Social Change) before you
start work on this!
i) Introduction
•
•
•
•
Write 1-2 paragraphs on the topic of social change and the various ways in
which you see the influence of social changes of different kinds in your
own life.
Identify the particular topic area you are choosing to focus on
(e.g. influence of smartphones on people’s everyday behaviours).
Explain why you find this issue interesting personally, and also why it is
relevant for sociologists to examine it (i.e. how it impacts society).
Provide a specific research question that you propose to explore through
your research.
ii) Proposed approach
•
Please outline how you will tackle your research question here. (This
means thinking about what aspects of your topic you will focus on.)
(I have provided a more detailed explanation of this on page 2.)
iii) Annotated Bibliography (See the example I have provided on page 3)
•
•
List each of the sources you will use to guide/frame your research, in
alphabetical order within each of the required 2 categories: a) books, b)
journal articles; you may also choose to include a third category c) internet
resources.
For each item in your list:- start by providing a complete bibliographic reference, using APA*
style (and including URLs for internet resources);
– for the peer-reviewed journal articles please also include the
Author’s Abstract;
– for all items please explain why you are choosing to use this
particular source for your research on this topic (in 1 or 2 sentences).
(*APA style: you will learn how to use this in the online Library Skills tutorial.)
•
Your Annotated Bibliography should therefore consist of:
a) ONE or more E-Books;
b) at least FIVE peer-reviewed articles;
c) it may also include a maximum of FIVE internet resources (e.g. news
media articles).
Together, these will be the foundation for your analysis, so it is necessary to
compile a good selection that between them will provide thorough coverage of
your topic.
Submit Assignment 1 by 11.59 p.m. Monday June 29th.

Additional information and some examples:
A: Proposed Approach
Students sometimes don’t understand what I want to see in the Proposed Approach section of
this assignment, so here is a detailed example to help explain this:
Suppose you start (in your Introduction section) by identifying divorce as an example of social
change that you find interesting – maybe because of personal experience in your own family or
observing how this has affected your friends. Divorce is something that has only gradually
become normalised in Canadian society over the last 50 years and so that makes it an
appropriate example of a social change that is having an impact on our society. Having
explained this you may then go on to state that your particular research question is How much
of an impact does divorce have on families?
In the next section (Proposed Approach) you should then explain in more detail how you
propose to explore this topic through your choice of books, research articles and
other resources on this topic. (You might have started out with some ideas about how to
explore the kind of material that will help you answer your research question – but it’s also quite
likely that you won’t be able to feel confident about this until you have started finding and
reading some of your sources.)
To go back to my example, once you started looking at the topic of divorce and its impact on
families you would immediately realise that there is a LOT of research on this and that
different studies have different areas of focus. For example, some focus on the economic
impact divorce has on families, while others study the personal/emotional impact. Going further,
some focus on the adults and how they deal with this and others (many!) have looked at how
children are affected by their parents’ divorce. (Going even further, some studies look at the
immediate effects and others have looked at the longer-term impact many years after the
divorce took place.)
So in this Proposed Approach section I would like you to tell me which strand of research you
are going to be pursuing. In my example this might involve looking first at some sources that
will provide a general overview of your topic (e.g. an e-book on divorce) and then maybe
looking for a couple of articles about how it affects the adults and others that look at the children.
(Or you could look only at those that focus on children – it would be up to you to decide that.)
The difference between what you write in the ‘Proposed Approach’ section and what you write
about any particular e-book or article that ends up in your Annotated Bibliography is that
there you explain what each individual book/article is going to contribute to your research.
For example, having stated in the Proposed Approach section that you are going to
focus specifically on how divorce affects children, you might have ended up with several
different articles on this:
–
one of these might offer data based on how children of divorced parents do/do not
succeed academically in school compared with children of non-divorced parents;
–
another might look at how adults look back on their childhood experiences of witnessing
their parents’ divorce;

–
a third article might look at how children of different ages are affected differently by their
parents’ divorce.
Given that you would have selected these articles from a mass of others, your task here in
your Annotated Bibliography is to explain why you chose each of these particular articles and
(for each item) how you think it will help you explore your research question.
So the purpose of the Proposed Approach section is to get you to think strategically about
how you are intending to investigate your chosen topic, so that you don’t just end up with a
somewhat random selection of sources that may or may not work well together.
As I read through that section I will then know what to look for in your selection of books and
articles in your Annotated Bibliography, and if I think they don’t match up well with your stated
approach I will be able to offer you some suggestions about either modifying your research
question or your approach or selecting different articles.
B) Annotated Bibliography
Here is an example of how you should present a peer-reviewed journal article in your
Annotated Bibliography. Be sure to follow this format.
b) Peer-reviewed articles. (remember to list these in alphabetical order, based on the last
name of the author)

Children. Journal of Divorce & Remarriage, 55(7), 539–556.

Author’s Abstract: (cut and paste this from the database listing OR from page 1 of the article
itself)
There is a dearth of research on whether and how a later-life parental divorce influences the
lives of adult children. Through qualitative interviews with 40
adult children of divorce (ACD)—those whose parents divorced after they were 18 years of
age—ACD were asked to discuss their experience of the parental divorce. There were
commonalities experienced by the ACD. However, only half of the ACD were initially affected
negatively by their parents’ divorce, whereas the other half did not have a tough time initially.
Factors including being “put in the middle,” along with strained parent–child relationships,
were found to have the potential to affect one’s experience.
Comments on this choice:
As part of my research I am interested in how individuals are affected by their parents’ divorce,
even when this happens once they are already adults (18+). This article provides some
interesting evidence of this, based on qualitative interviews with a sample of young adults.
