Blessed Man and Joseph

The Blessed Man of Psalm 1-2 and Joseph are similar in many ways, but one of the biggest things I see is that their fathers see them as holy, a person better than all others. The fathers compare Joseph and the Blessed Man by saying they are good compared to the rest of the people who are labeled as wicked. A good example of this is the first two chapters of Psalm the author says, Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” (Psalm 1:1-2). In the case of Joseph it is explained in Genesis how he is adored, “Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him.” (Genesis 37: 3). Now with all of this praise comes a lot of jealousy and hate which happens to both of them as people try to take them down. In my opinion Joseph deals with this a lot more because of what his brothers do to him. After telling his brothers of the dreams that said he will one day reign over everyone including his father and brothers, the brothers become very angry and jealous. The brothers’ plan when Joseph was coming to meet them was to kill him, but they decided blood shed was not the way so instead they held him captive when a traveling caravan came through where they were working. They decided to strip off all his clothes and sell Joseph to the traveling Ishmaelites, who then sold Joseph to the Pharoah. You can see in Psalm 3 that Absalom is trying to take the throne of David by killing him, but this creates a problem with the Blessed Man because when He comes it will be His throne. Psalm 3: 1-4 says, “O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, “There is no salvation for him in God.” But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.”, these verses to me are showing how there is a lot of evil after the throne, Absalom, but with the coming of this Blessed Man there will be protection from the Lord through Him. This compares to Joseph’s story because when he is sold to the Pharaoh of Egypt, the Pharaoh sees the power of God through Joseph and appoints him chief administer of Egypt.

One can conclude that from the comparison of the Blessed Man of Psalms 1-2 and Joshua that the similarities are highly relatable to one another. Joshua was a military minded individual and was chosen by God to replace Moses to lead Israel.

Psalms 1-2 could be best described as the way to happiness and the Lord’s chosen king. Following the verses of Psalms 1-2 in the order in which they were written; one can draw comparisons about Joshua as the message of the chapters unfold. God blesses those people who refuse evil advice and won’t follow sinners or join in sneering at God (Psalms 1:1). Joshua held himself to a holy standard in which he could be considered a “blessed man” – Joshua was not only loyal to Moses but was also a true servant of God. Joshua did not disobey God’s Word or commands, and he knew in his heart that the only way to receive blessings is to adopt the lifestyle in which God wanted His to follow.

Joshua was aware that by following evil and wicked ways of the world, that this would only lead to punishment through God’s destruction. I personally believe this is the same concept that is seen as reader examine Psalms 1-2. Shall an individual not follow The Law of God and decide to follow evil or sinful advice; they will be face with the wrath of God and be condemned for all eternity. Joshua warned the people of Israel as he knew they would continue to rebel and turn their backs on the Lord. A good explanation of how Joshua lived his life can be found in Psalms 1:2; Instead, the Law of the Lord makes them happy, and they think about it day and night. Joshua was a true man of God and he adopted the standards and beliefs to become a “blessed man”.

In conclusion, there are many similarities as the reader begins to do more in-depth analysis of Psalms 1-2. However, Joshua was not able to successfully alter the hearts and minds of God’s people.
