The paper has to five pages with sources Introduction
Social media plays a big role in our lives. It is something so ingrained in our lives to the
extent that we cannot imagine our lives without it. Social Media brought a lot of advantages to
humanity such as networking and keeping relationships going with other people. Also, it gave us
the opportunity to know other people from different parts of the world with different
backgrounds. There are many social media platforms that vary in usage between people and
varies in its impact on society, but Instagram is the most popular on these days. Instagram tend to
impact the society on social acceptance and it has its implications that came from self-promoting.
Instagram’s impact on behavior and mental health
Instagram nowadays could change our behavior having a big impact on our mental
health. In Instagram we are exposed to numerous amounts of content. Most of the time these
Instagram users are being influenced either by Instagram influencers who might be celebrities or
users with thousands of followers. In the last few years, Instagram has witnessed many trends
that influenced its users around the world. For instance, in 2018 there was a celebrity that started
a challenge called KEKE Dance which is basically recording a video from inside the car and
dancing on KEKE song while the car is driving slowly. At that time this dance went viral all over
the world. This kind of trends shows how fast trends could spread on the social media
communities and make its users interact and respond to them. The other type of influencer in
social media are the celebrities or most followed people with a lot of impact. This kind of
influence impacts people when they are being exposed to the influencers content such as the type
of images they post, the caption of the picture, the positions the take for picture and so on.
However, Instagram also affects our mental health. According to Ashraf Sadat Ahadzadeh ,
Saeed Pahlevan Sharif and Fon Sim Ong in the article, ‘Self-Schema and Self-Discrepancy
mediate the influence of Instagram usage on body image satisfaction among youth,’ it reports
that: “Exposure to ideal photos in Instagram affects investment in physical attractiveness and
appearance centrality and importance placed on appearance, which in turn leads to cognitive
discrepancy between actual and ideal self. The incompatible beliefs about self which results will
ultimately cause negative emotional state or dissatisfaction with body.” Following people who
are considered attractive or ideal to us may result in self-doubt about our appearance. Therefore,
that might cause dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. The best thing is to be conscious that the
reality is very distant from the edited and idealized pictures that people post in the Instagram.
Specially celebrities, they play with their image in order to look more attractive and draw more
followers and attention. If we are to be focused in imitating them all the time this could result in
us spending more than we can afford in cosmetic products, getting emotional discomfort with
our image resulting in depression and other health issues.
Instagram and business marketing
Instagram is being used by brands to promote their products through Instagram’s
influencers, who have a big impact on consumer’s purchase decision. According to Marijke De
Veirman, Veroline Cauberghe & Liselot Hudders in their article, Marketing through Instagram
influencers: the impact of number of followers and product divergence on brand attitude, it says
that: “Social media influencers are referred to as people who have built a sizeable social network
of people following them. In addition, they are seen as a regard for being a trusted tastemaker in
one or several niches.” This implies that someone with a lot of followers is seen immediately in
the eyes of many people as someone to imitate, with reputation, and effective decision makers.
Therefore, more and more people feel inclined to imitate them. As the article stated these brands
started abandoning the traditional form of advertisement and heading towards influencers
endorsements. This type of endorsements called Electronic Word of Mouth (eWOM) which is
considered for brands a more effective way of advertising than the traditional way. Therefore,
eWOM is considered of higher credibility and lower resistance to the marketing message that the
companies want to send to the people. There many software that indicate if you are eligible to be
an influencer which is based on minimum amount of 10,000 followers. The biggest challenge for
companies is to identify the right influencer to endorse their products. Companies take into
considerations the number of followers per influencer to determine whether it results in a high
reach of commercial message. However, that is not always a true indicator to choose an
influencer. According to Veirman, Cauberghe & Hudders “it was found that the influencer’s
number of followers may change perceptions in the sense that when a product with a divergent
design is endorsed by an influencer with a high number of followers, perceptions of uniqueness
and eventually attitudes towards the brand are lower compared to when it is endorsed by an
influencer with a moderate number of followers.” This phenomenon could be explained by the
fact that people feel more comfortable listening to someone physical and that they see as their
role model than to an abstract company that only wants to take money out of them. At the end
the influencer is able to get the effect on people’s mind and decisions that the companies might
not be able to or at least with the same fastness. On the contrary, from the consumers perspective
on Instagram, they view people with a large number of followers as attractive, trustworthy and
credible.
Conclusion
The main purpose of Instagram is providing a unique type of communication besides
networking. Some Instagram users could be affected by self-promoting and could get into
seeking social acceptance. Self-promoting is used to promote people in society as well as
promoting products through celebrities. And this is exactly what the marketing companies look
for in order to boost sales and influence people. They know that with technology comes change
therefore, Instagram is the perfect platform to extend their influence to people’s minds and
pockets. In addition, Instagram might lead some people to the trap of comparing themselves to
others which could result in serious issues such as low self-esteem. The ideal celebrities that they
follow might look to distant, out of their normal appearances since these types of influencers are
simply idealized by the business industry as models of human perfection. Finally, though seeking
social acceptance or validation might be something we all do pursuit, we should be aware of our
purpose of using Instagram enjoying it but without falling in the traps it could present us.

After reading the novel A Scanner Darkly that gave the inspiration that there are many
facts are unknown to the public about the drugs world. Specifically, the inspiring part in the
novel was when it mentioned the rehab “New Path” and how it was linked to the real-life rehab
“Florida Shuffle” and its practices to keep the patients the longest time possible to advantage of
them. Therefore, that would lead to the question what are the other hidden facts the public are
not aware of? Drugs have been known for the humanity for thousands of years especially natural
drugs. The most common natural drugs are marijuana, cocaine and heroin which each one come
from the plant cannabis, coca and opium respectively (Oneill, 2013). However, the drugs
nowadays are considered illegal in most of the countries around the world but in the United
States case there was a story behind it that happened during the President Richard Nixon
presidency that lead to criminalizing it. Furthermore, when it comes to drug trafficking the
United States are facing a lot of challenges regarding drug trafficking prevention and its
governmental spending.
Why dugs are illegal?
As it was stated in the article A Brief History of The Drug War, that many drugs like
marijuana, opium and cocaine have been legal for thousands of years for medical and spiritual
purposes. The story behind criminalizing drugs was not about the reason that drugs are harmful
to the body of its users and could lead to overdose death, but it is far from that. It is all go back to
1971 when the President Richard Nixon when had a campaign but he was concerned about two
groups as he considers them his enemies which were the blacks and the hippies besides the
Latinos and chinses immigrants. Thus, what he did is that he associated Blacks with heroin,
Latinos with Marijuana and Chinese with opium. Then, these drugs were criminalized.
Therefore, the government could disturb these communities and arrest their leaders.
The economics of drug trafficking
Drug trafficking not only impact humans’ health but it also has a major impact on the
economy. According to (Ross, 2016) as he stated in his article The Economics of Illicit Drug
Trafficking, that since the war on drugs was declared by the president Richard Nixon in 1971,
illegal drugs trafficking started to become one of the major activities in the black market. The
black market naturally has various tendencies that operates the market in a monopolistic way
with high barriers entry. In addition, trading in the black market include uncertainty of contract
protection, property rights, and lack of recognizable contract law. The other tendency that the
black market has, especially in the illegal drugs market, is that the powerful producers could gain
profit more than the expected normal profit by limiting the competition and restricting output.
The power those producers have create a type of customers that are called captive customers
which make them afraid even to seek treatment for their addiction. Furthermore, those customers
rarely challenge the producers even if they cause harm to them. Therefore, that would make the
producers the winners in this market since those producers make an unbelievable markup
compered to legal goods which could reach up to 2,300% (Ross, 2016). That is compered to a
normal product like coffee with a mark of 69%. That huge markup those producers gain is also
harmful to the economy since this huge spending by drug users lead to decrease in spending in
the legal market besides it is also lead to the loss of their productivity in the society. However,
Since the war on drugs started in 1971 the United States has spent over $1 trillion on drug
prevention which also include a loss of $193 billion was payed by taxpayers. On the other hand,
in 2014 the white house estimated that the amount paid the drug users is approximately $100
billion. Therefore, that would show how huge was the government spending in the last decades
on drug enforcement in comparison to how much the drug users pay.
Drug trafficking methods
The main part of drug trafficking is to find a way to transport the drugs to another place.
According to (Diep, 2019) in her article How Drugs Pour Into The U.S. From Mexico, most the
drugs that been smuggled to the United States is coming from Mexico. She also pointed out that
a lot of those smugglers are still using the old method of transporting the drugs in their personal
vehicles or trailers carrying legal goods at ports of U.S entry. With that being said, this would
deny the claims that Trump’s administration has suggested regarding building the wall along the
border to prevent drug smuggling into the United States. These traditional ways are not the only
ways that illegal drugs are being smuggled to the United States. As (Puerta, 2018) stated in his
article 5 Creative Ways Drug Traffickers Evade Authorities, criminal organizations are being
forced to update their smuggling techniques which is due to new governments control strategies
and the technological advances. One of the methods these smugglers use is called “Chemical
Masking”. Basically, this method depends on changing the appearance of cocaine and dissolving
it and turning it into liquid. This method has been a common method between smugglers for
years which prove its effectiveness since liquid cocaine is hard to detect by drug agencies around
the world whether it was inside the smuggler’s body or incorporated into other materials such as
clothes. Furthermore, as Woody stated in his article Fake vegetables, frozen sharks, and an Xbox
— here are some of drugs smugglers’ most bizarre methods there are other creative methods that
those smugglers use to bring the drugs to the U.S. One of the most advanced methods is that they
made a homemade submarine to cross the ocean heading to the United States. The other method
is that they started using new technology such drones to transport small shipments of cocaine or
marijuana(Puerta, 2018).
In conclusion, In the United States there are some reasons behind criminalizing drugs in
the past. Moreover, currently drugs trafficking is a big challenge for the government to prevent.
The illegal drugs in the United States were not illegal before 1971 which was During Richard
Nixon presidency. During that President Nixon was targeting the blacks, Chinese and Latinos
communities so he criminalized all drugs and then associated each community to certain type of
drug which were cocaine, marijuana and opium respectively. After that, he could arrest their
leaders easily since they are committing a crime of having the drugs. However, drugs trafficking
is a challenge for the government because drug smugglers are getting more advanced and
creative which makes hard for the government to detect some methods of drug smuggling. The
advanced drug smuggling methods is not the only challenge but also its impact on the economy.
The governmental spending on drugs trafficking prevention is huge which is considered as a loss
in the economy besides the exaggerated amount the drug users pay in the black market. With that
being said I think I agree with Ross claim that legalizing the drugs would save the government a
lot of money and it would be better for economy.
