Inherited Disorders and Heterozygous Genotypes Take Home Test 3 Answer two questions. The first question has 4 parts. The second question is claim, evidence, reasoning. The questions are attached to the pdf. Take Home Test 3 – Two pages (30 pts)
1) Part A-D: Inherited Disorders (15 pts)
Conduct individual research on Huntington’s disease using two online quality (trustworthy)
resources.
Part A: What resources did you use for this section? Name and link of resource
i.
ii.
Part B: Provide a brief summary (3-4 sentences) of the disease. Include how the trait is passed on
to offspring (recessive, dominant, or co-dominant), whether the disease is treatable, when do
people develop the disease (age), and list a few common symptoms associated with the disease.
Part C: Using a punnett square – figure out the possible genotypes (gene combination) that would
occur if the father and mother both had heterozygous genotypes.
Part D: Using the results of your punnett square what is the probability that any of the children
would be born without the trait for Huntington’s disease?
2.) Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (15 pts)
You come across a packet of unknown seeds and after planting them you find out they grow into a
flowering plant. Upon closer inspection you notice the following traits on your plants:
Flowers: Red
Leaves: Smooth edges
or White
or jagged edges
J
S
Assume that the flowering alleles will be either A or a and the leaf alleles will be B or b. Also
assume that these traits are not linked meaning you can get any color flower with any leaf shape.
Because you enjoyed your BSC 1005 class on genetics sooo much you decided to grow seeds from 2
plants with the same white flowers and smooth edge leaves.
From this experiment you find that for every four seeds you planted three of them had the white
flowers and smooth leaves (like the parent), but one of them had a white flower and jagged edge
leaves. Use the table below as your raw data and make a CER about the parent’s genotypes.
Trait 1/
Trait 2
S
S
Parent
Two
Parent One
S
Note: This CER does not provide all of the
information needed. This means you will have
to make some logical assumptions. You will find
it useful to create punnett square combinations
for both the flower and leaves. I recommend
working on each trait (flower or leaf)
separately.
Remember to provide these assumptions in
your reasoning and back it up with evidence.
Evidence can be the data provided in the table
or if you did some punnett square calculations
on your own. Come and see me if you have
questions
The prompt question for this CER is: Which flower color and which leaf type are most likely the
dominant and recessive in this scenario?
