CADV 350 Applied Cognitive Development, Spring 2019
Grading: 100 Points (30% of final grade)
Due: April 3rd, 2019 by 11:59pm
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your proficiency of critical thinking
skills and professional written communication skills in relation to the scientific literature
in cognitive development. You will write a research paper using empirical research on a
topic of your choice.
Steps to Completing the Paper
(1) Choose a topic that thoroughly interests you in the broad field of cognitive
development as it pertains to children or adolescents.
(2) Narrow down your topic to a particular focus (e.g., Language, Memory, Attention,
Reading, etc.) and then even more so when you have identified a particular subarea
(e.g., Attention à Attention Deficit à Attention Deficit and Academic achievement)
(3) Visit Dr. Morag’s office hours if you would like 1-‐1 input on your topic.
(4) Conduct a thorough database search to locate scholarly articles (the visit from our
librarian will be helpful. Please make sure you attend class that day).
(5) Narrow down 3 high-‐quality scholarly journal articles (research/empirical studies
only).
(6) Read the journal articles.
(7) Summarize the body of knowledge in your own words (this is not part of the
paper; this is an exercise in scholarly pre-‐writing).
(8) Develop a thesis statement that is supported by your sources. Pull evidence from
these empirical articles to support your thesis statement.
(9) Create an outline of your paper (this is a critical step to help map out your thoughts).
(10) Start writing. Show how you synthesize the literature.
(11) Use standard convention of APA formatting for citing scholarly work.
(12) Edit and continue editing as you write.
(13) Reference your citations using APA formatting. Title page in APA as well.
(14) Proofread your paper (e.g., spellcheck, grammar, formatting, repetition).
15. Upload the Word document to Turnitin.com (in Canvas). Do not use Pages or PDF.
More Guidelines
• The paper should be 3 double-‐spaced pages.
• You must use APA style for citing your work. APA will also be used for formatting
your Reference page and Title page. YOU DO NOT NEED AN ABSTRACT OR A
METHODS SECTION that the APA manual suggests for a paper.
• Bold the thesis statement in your paper.
• Your paper will be typed, use Times New Roman 12pt font, and 1” margins.
• Points will be deducted for using direct quotes from sources. You must

Your journal articles will be published within the last 10 years (2009-‐2019).
Remember…
• Do not use direct quotes.
• Do not regurgitate information or list the findings of each study one after
another.
• INTEGRATION OF THE FINDINGS is key to a well-‐developed paper. You will
• need to show evidence to support your thesis in a logical, fully developed way.
• You may use MORE THAN 3 articles in your paper, but it is not required.
• Internet sources, book chapters, textbooks, magazines, technical reports, theses
or other non peer-‐reviewed papers are NOT permitted as part of the 3 sources.
Points will be deducted if you use any of these.
• A grading rubric will be provided.
