Critical Analysis

Description

Step 2: Go to the website: https://www.biography.com/crime-figure  READ and write ABOUT Betty Broderick  (Links to an external site.) Step 3: Find the Biography of your selected offender.  To find the biography of your selected offender, scroll through the pages and click on their name and picture. Then read their biography to get a better understanding of their life and crimes. Note: This website is an extensive database of women and men, victims and offenders. For some offenders, their biography may be towards the bottom of the list, for which you will have to click the “see more” icon and continue to scroll.  Step 4: Use the information from the biography and write a critical analysis of the woman offender you have selected. *You may incorporate outside CREDIBLE sources for more information on your selected offender if you wish.  Your paper should be answered in the following five section format: Paragraph 1: Introduction. Create a thesis statement regarding the following: Why is sex and gender relevant in understanding crime? (“Sex and Gender are not relevant to understanding crime…” is not an acceptable thesis). The woman offender that you select will serve as the framework of your argument. Briefly introduce the woman offender you have selected, include information such as their name, birth place, identity factors (race, sexual orientation, religion (if stated), nationality, etc.), and their crime(s). Paragraph 2: List one or two criminological theories that you believe describes your selected woman’s offending behavior. Use specific evidence/details about them and their crimes as support for this theory. End this section with a concluding sentence that reasserts how the connection to theory in this section helps better understand and/or prove your paper’s overall claim. *You need to select a criminological theory discussed in lecture/the textbook. However there are limitations. It cannot be a Classical Perspective Theory (in other words you may NOT use Cesare Lombroso and William Ferrero, The Gluecks, or Pollak’s theory of offending).  Paragraph 3: Compare how your selected woman’s offending behavior is similar to men’s offending behavior. You may use this space to reflect on childhood, motivations for offending, type of offense, and any other similarities you identify between this individual’s life and crime(s), and men’s offending. Explain these observations critically and in detail. Surface level responses such as “both men and women commit crime” or “both genders can be violent” will not suffice. End this section with a concluding sentence that reasserts similarities between men and women in offending. *For this section it may be easier to focus on one man offender who has committed a similar crime and do a comparison.  Paragraph 4: Contrast how your selected women’s offending behavior is different from men’s offending behavior. You may use this space to reflect on childhood, motivations for offending, type of offense, and any other differences you identify between this individual’s life, crime(s), and men’s offending. Explain these observations critically and in detail. Surface level responses such as “men and women are different biologically” or unfounded claims will not suffice. End this section with a concluding sentence that reasserts differences between men and women in offending. *For this section it may be easier to focus on one man offender who has committed a similar crime and do a contrast.  Paragraph 5: Write a conclusion. For this section: Briefly summarize the main points. List at least one counter argument that poses against your main argument and/or some aspect of your reasoning? Refute these claims using evidence from your analysis. End this paragraph with a concluding sentence that reasserts your paper’s claim. The goal of this paper to analyze the relationship between gender and offending. Your paper needs to demonstrate that you have reflected on this relationship critically and from a gender and justice perspective. Further, for the analysis of this paper, you will need to stick solely to an analysis of crime causation. Any additional analysis about criminal justice sanctions, procedures, and/or unrelated social critiques, will result in a deduction of points.  EACH paragraph should be at least (5-9 sentences). New paragraphs should be indented. FORMAT: Cover Page:  Meaningful title; Students name; Couse name (CJS 438 Gender and Criminal Justice); Professors name (Dr. Posey); Semester term (e.g.) Spring 2021. Cover page should be in APA format, 7th edition.  Font: Times New Roman; Size 12.  Margins: 1 inch.  Spacing: Double spaced. Additional Formatting Requirements: Page numbers beginning on the first page; Running header.  Paper Length: The completed paper should be 3-4 pages in length (not including the Cover Page and References Page).  Citations and References Page: APA format, 7th edition.
