Aung San Suu Kye: In Quest of Democracy [3 ideas]

 

[1] Suu Kye’s premise is that though opponents have argued that democracy is not suited for the Burmese people, a close look at Buddhist traditions suggest otherwise. See Paragraphs 1-2. Is this an effective introduction to the problem?

[2] Suu Kye then asks why Burma has failed to live up to its early expectations as a democracy. The people, she argues, “got at the heart of the matter” by pointing to the “words of the Buddha.” Buddha pointed out “four causes of decline and decay.” Is this happening in our society? Yes? No? The answer is somewhat complex, of course.

[3] In defending Buddhist teachings and the Buddhist view of what democracy looks like, Suu Kye identified “TEN DUTIES OF KINGS.” Have a look at these and ask the question, is this what democracy looks like? You might focus on maybe three or four of them.

Opponents of the movement for democracy have sought to undermine it by [1] casting aspersions of the competence of the people and [2] identifying democracy as “un-Burmese.”  Third world governments do this all the time—But in Burma, because it’s isolated, people have had to draw on their own resources to explode these “twin myths” –that the people are unfit for “political responsibility” and that the society is unsuitable for democracy…People’s appetite for discussion has “sharpened”—interested in representative govt., rule of law

 

Buddhists, as mentors, have led the way in this regard, drawing on Classical learning, etc.

 

Why has Burma failed to live up to its promise? International scholars determined this and that—the people, however, turned to the Buddhist “Four cause of decline…”

*COMMA SPLICES and RUN-ON sentences look almost alike, though they are not the same thing. They are similar in that they incorrectly join two INDEPENDENT CLAUSES.

 

COMMA SPLICES: A comma splice [also known as a comma “fault”] is created when a comma separates two independent clauses. “The hurricane intensified, it turned toward the land.” [4 major causes]

 

“Thomas Edison was a productive inventor, he held almost 1,300 U.S. and foreign patents.” [2^nd independent clause starts with a pronoun—it should be a new sentence–replace the comma with a period, start a new sentence]

 

“Thomas Edison was a brilliant scientist; however, he spent only three months in school.” [conjunctive adverb that joins two sentences—this conjunctive adverb (however) should be preceded by a semicolon, not a comma—remove the comma, put a semicolon after scientist]

 

“Thomas Edison invented the microphone; in addition, he created a superior storage battery.” [transitional expression that joins two sentences—this transitional expression (in addition) should begin a new sentence—replace the comma after “microphone”  with a period, start a new sentence]

 

“Thomas Edison was the genius behind many inventions; among the best known are the phonograph and the incandescent light bulb.” [2^ndindependent clause explains or gives an example of the information in the first independent clause—replace the comma after “ inventions”  with a  period, start a new sentence]

 

RUN-ON SENTENCES: a run-on sentence is created when no punctuation at all separates two independent clauses. “The hurricane intensified it turned toward the land.” [4 major causes]
