Mrs. Staton, Fall 2020
Thesis Statement Formula
Specific Topic + Personal Opinion = Thesis Statement
Example:
Censorship in Literature + has negative effects on education =
Because classic works of literature are often used in classrooms to teach important historical lessons about past eras and cultures, censoring literary works to remove offensive language and ideas is not an effective way to educate students.
Thesis Statement Process
1. Formulate the topic as a question.
2. Answer the question.
3. Qualify the statement.
4. Revisit the statement when the paper is written.
Example:
- What are the effects of censorship in literature on education?
- There are many negative effects of censoring literature in our schools.
- Because classic works of literature are often used in classrooms to teach important historical lessons about past eras and cultures, censoring literary works to remove offensive language and ideas is not an effective way to educate students.
- <This step is completed after the essay is written.>
Remember that a Thesis Statement is NOT:
· An announcement of what the writer is discussing in the paper.
· A notable quote from a famous person, a research source, a song/poem, a book, etc.
· A fact or statistic.
· A question, rhetorical or otherwise.
