Research Paper

Directions:  For this assignment you are to do the following:

1. Pick a topic that has something to do with CRIMINOLOGY (e.g., Crime, criminal behavior, criminals)
2. Formulate a research question or hypothesis regarding your topic (make sure you have the independent and dependent variable(s) in the correct order).
3. Pick ONE criminological theory that you think explains your topic (e.g., the crime, the behavior, the criminal)
4. Find 5 scholarly journal articles that talk about your chosen theory- pick those who help you answer your research question with theoretical support.
5. Find 5 scholarly journal articles that present research about your topic
6. Write a literature review with the articles that you have found that address your RQ or Hypothesis from a theoretical standpoint.

The idea is that you are choosing a topic, formulating a research question and then presenting research regarding your topic and answering your research question from a theoretical perspective. 

The Format should be that of an academic article:

Introduction (RQ at the end of the intro)

Theory Section (Heading)  Be sure to have sub headings.

You must lay down the foundation of the theory

• (thoughts to consider in this section): What is the theory, what is it history, what types of behavior has it been used to explain?
• Lay the foundation for how this theory is the best theory to explain the behavior that you are looking at in your paper (not opinion- must use academic articles)

Literature Review (HEADING) Be sure to have sub headings.

Discussion/Conclusion

Format Requirements:

• 8 page (min) 12 page (max)
• 12 pt. font
• Double spaced, NO space between paragraphs
• Name on cover page- not on pages with your writing
• Stapled
• Works cited page in ADDTION to citing correctly within the text
• Remember, when in doubt CITE, CITE, CITE!!!

REMEMBER:  This is not something that you can do quickly- it will take you several days and many hours.  You can anticipate reading approximately 30 articles before you find the 10 to use!  DO NOT wait until the last minute to complete this assignment!!!!I STRONGLY encourage you to take your paper several times to the writing center.  I also encourage you to use the resource librarian should you need help with finding articles, etc…
