1st Response:

A family structure plays such a large role in a Childs life and in their development. How the family is structured overall, the influences a family has on a child and family interactions are all aspects of family structure that can develop juvenile delinquency at a young age. Children’s interactions and relationships with family influence the development of antisocial behavior and delinquency. Family interactions are most important during early childhood, but they can have long-lasting effects (Juvenile Crime & Juvenile Justice, 2001). Many studies have found a high rate of juvenile delinquency connected with broken families. A high level of conduct disorder and behavioral disturbances in children of divorcing parents before the divorce took place showed that disruptive parenting practices and antisocial personalities of the parents accounted for apparent effects of divorces and remarriage (Juvenile Crime & Juvenile Justice, 2001). The increased risk of delinquency experienced amount children of broken homes is related to the family conflict prior to the divorce or separation. This is mainly due to how much hostility and aggression is built up in the household during this event.

Single parent households have also been reported to being a factor of juvenile delinquency. Without the support of two parents, or even a household where an adult is not present due to working hours, can lead a child feeling neglected, which in most cases, will result to negative behavior. research that takes into account the socioeconomic conditions of a single parent house hold and other risk, including disciplinary styles and problems in supervising and monitoring children, show that these other factors account for the differential outcomes in these families (Juvenile Crime & Juvenile Justice, 2001). Children in a single parent household are more likely to be exposed to other criminogenic influences (Juvenile Crime & Juvenile Justice, 2001). This is especially common where there is no father figure present.

In a two parent household, children may not receive the supervision, training, and advocacy needed to ensure a positive developmental course. Poor parent managing and poor family interactions are associated with the development of delinquent behavior (Juvenile Crime & Juvenile Justice, 2001). Failure to set clear expectations for children’s behavior, inconsistent discipline, excessively severe or aggressive discipline and poor monitoring and supervision (Juvenile Crime & Juvenile Justice, 2001). Even in a household with two parents instead of one, if the household does not provide goof parenting tactics to their children, juvenile delinquency is still very possible.
