Isn’t doing this a way of showing the society that crime is good and that it pays? These questions have made a good number of people to assert that prisoners should be earn their own upkeep and the million of dollars spent on their upkeep should be invested elsewhere for the benefit of the society and the country.

(based on 2009 results) The economic benefit of this amount can be seen differently, the leading view being the fact that if the prisoner was left in the society, he or she would have caused more mayhem hence disrupting the needed societal peace. This would thus jeopardize the ability of people to work hence justifying the use of this huge amount in our prisons. Beside this, if the people would have been subjected to other forms of punishment such as capital punishment, it would have cost the taxpayers an even higher amount of money.
