David Eisenhower, despite his renown as the architect of military victory on the European front during World War II was something of an enigma to the American people. Eisenhower’s wartime achievements catapulted him into national prominence which he apparently neither initially sought nor had the training or experience to be prepared for. He spent much of his adult life as a professional army staff officer, often stationed abroad and his penchant for preferring the private company of corporate executives often isolated him from changing social trends throughout the nation. Eisenhower was uncomfortable speaking in public often disguising his unease by grinning and clasping his hands behind his back. In May of 1954 the Supreme Court unanimously outlawed racial segregation in public education forcing the president to publicly address an issue he preferred to avoid. Eisenhower sought to maintain the status quo in both domestic and international affairs although publicity of dramatic transformations taking place across the world made that impossible. He refused to halt Senator Joseph McCarthy’s demagoguery and preferred quiet diplomacy to direct political confrontations. Eisenhower enjoyed golf, fishing, and grilling steaks on the barbecue of the second story Truman balcony overlooking the great lawn at the southern portion of the White House.
