QUESTION 1?Celeste, a 22-year-old woman, arrives at your office and quickly tells you that her family forced her to make an appointment with a psychologist, but that she doesn’t think there is anything to talk about. You notice that although she is wearing a sweatshirt several sizes too big, she is extremely thin. When you ask about her current weight she expresses frustration, voicing how fat she is and that she still has at least 20 or 30 pounds to lose before she’s even close to thin enough. In response to a question about her diet, she mentions that she typically starts the day with half a cup of fat free cottage cheese and coffee, has four stalks of celery and eight saltines for lunch, and brown rice, steamed veggies and four ounces of chicken for dinner. Celeste tells you she knows exactly what she consumes, down to the calorie (625 calories per day). She denied engaging in exercise, vomiting or laxative use.

Celeste may meet criteria for which disorder (and the specific type)?

QUESTION 2? You want to help Celeste understand how important it is to get treatment. What are 3 potential physical consequences of her disorder you could tell her about to encourage her to stay in therapy?

QUESTION 3?

Alex is brought in by his roommate who is concerned about him. The roommate says that Alex has not slept for a week and a half and has been making wild claims about a special “project.”

When you question Alex he answers in a loud, quick way. He confirms that he hasn’t slept much in the last week, but that is because he discovered a new process for manipulating weather using satellites. Alex explains that this new technology will solve world hunger and certainly make him billions. Climate change will be a thing of the past and he will go down in history as a genius. His roommate said that Alex has had a ton of computer equipment delivered to their apartment recently which he is pretty sure Alex can’t afford. Alex also stopped coming into work so he could focus all of his energy on the weather invention.

His roommate is particularly worried about Alex because he has seen him when he is really low, which occurred last month. At that point, Alex had been expressing how worthless he is and talking about killing himself. Alex’s roommate said that he has seen this pattern before, and knows his friend needs help.

What diagnosis would you give Alex?

A.Bipolar I disorder

B.Cyclothymic disorder

C. Bipolar II disorder

D.Major depressive disorder

QUESTION 4

What is your rationale for that diagnosis?
