Syracuse University Do Generational Differences Influence the Visual Perception of The Standard of Professionalism? The major component in this course is writing a research proposal of a unique study describing a correlational, quasi-experimental, or experimental design to answer a question of interest to your group. You will be preparing a concise APA-style research proposal based on literature searches and group discussions. The proposal will include introduction, method, expected results, and discussion sections, title page, abstract, references section, tables, figures, etc.Please write abstract, introduction, method sections and references only so far.Please follow the instruction in Experiment layout document below, do not digress from the subject. Research Question: Do generational differences influence the visual perception of the
standard of professionalism?
Hypothesis: College students, including millennials and generation z, have standards
of professionalism that are less traditional and more inclusive of varying physical
attributes whereas boomers and generation x tend to have more conservative views of
what is considered professional.
Procedure:

? A: Millenials/Gen Y (1977 – 1995) + Generation Z (1996 – TBD) vs
? B: Boomers (1946 – 1964) + Gen X (1965 – 1976)
? Gender
? Education Level/Profession
? Race/Ethnicity
SAMPLE:
? 25 people per generational group for a total of about 50
? Location of sampling(in Binghamton population):
? Wegmans (or other supermarkets)
? Restaurants
Use real people + take pictures of them normal vs with makeup/jewelry/hairstyle
Pictures to reflect real life workplace demographics (control for race + gender quotas) ? in our
methods mention that we tried to control for this but was not realistic so we evened out our
sample (we are trying to get at least two people both male and female for each race)
? WHITE: (1 male and 1 female) , Each person have 3 different pictures
? BLACK: (1 male and 1 female) , Each person have 3 different pictures
? ASIAN: (1 male and 1 female) , Each person have 3 different pictures
? LATINX: (1 male and 1 female) , Each person have 3 different pictures
Pictures:
? Experimental Group #1: 1 traditionally professional pic
? Experimental Group #2: 1 excessive makeup or jewelry
? Control Group #2: 1 casual pic
Survey:
? Randomize order of picture appearance, make sure first picture is different for each
participant, record who gets which pic first
? Make as quick of a judgement as possible (about 5 sec)
? Use Semantic Differential Scale (Likert Scale): have participants evaluate their
perception of professionalism on a scale from Not Professional to Professional (5 point
scale)
? Each picture has 4 questions
