Description: Meituan-Dianping takeout is one of the largest take-out online platforms in China. The recent popular article “Takeaway Riders Stuck in the System” reveals the dilemma faced by takeaway riders. Due to the shorter delivery time, takeout riders have to overdrive, retrograde, and run red lights which have led to a sharp rise in the number of traffic accidents. In the system setting, delivery time is the most important indicator while timeout is not allowed. For takeout riders, it means bad reviews, lower revenue, or even unemployment. In 2019, the average delivery time for take-out orders across the industry in China was 10 minutes shorter than three years ago. Many netizens suggested that the platform should improve the system and relax the delivery time to make the delivery more reasonable. Meituan-Dianping takeaway says that they will optimize the system by giving riders eight minutes of flexibility to wait for delayed lifts and so on. In bad weather, the system will extend the delivery time of the rider or even stop receiving orders. At the same time, the rider’s appeal function will be upgraded. The rider’s assessment and income will not be affected after the verification of overtime and complaints due to bad weather, accidents, and other special circumstances.
