Introduction
The Greek Civilization is known to have lasted from 800 BC up to 146 BC, the time in which it fell into the hands of the Roman Empire in the Battle of Corinth. Within this time frame, Classical Greece prospered, 500 BC to 400 BC, under the leadership of the Athenians who successfully managed to ward off the Persian invasion. An outstanding feature of this civilization is the astute class of philosophers it bequeathed the world: Plato, Socrates and Aristotle included. Poignantly, it is pointed out that one of the factors which enabled Greece as a civilization was the existence of the Polis. The Polis was a Greek city state, though sometimes it was used to refer to a Greek citizen or even the Greek citizenship itself. It is pointed that it is because of the role the Polis played that Greece was able to rise into stardom and consolidate its power.
