Provoked by Jocasta’s recall of the prophecy by the oracle, Oedipus discloses what prompted him to depart from Corinth. He narrates the prophecy of the Delphic Oracle who told him, “You will mate with your own mother and shed with your own hands the blood of your own sire”. To try and escape this, he freed Corinth believing that his real parents are were Polybus and Merope which was not the case.
