American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Family Physicians. (2004.) Clinical practice guideline: Diagnosis and management of acute otitis media. Retrieved May 17, 2008, from http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;113/5/1451
This source is a filtered source because it contains a summary of evidence-based literature related to AOM. The resulting evidence report and other sources of data were used to formulate the practice guideline recommendations. As such, it is an evidence-based guideline resource which is designed to be used by physicians in handling acute otitis media. The evidence produced here is quite appropriate in nursing practice given the large synthesis of data that has been used to come up with the guidelines. Besides this, the data was synthesized by experts from different fields such as infectious disease, epidemiology, and otolaryngology. The guideline details step by step diagnosis and what the physician is supposed to do at each step. This is opposed to the traditional way whereby antibiotics were just prescribed without first ascertaining the cause of infection.
