Mr. Gershwin Case
It has been noted that young children and elderly patients with burns have higher mortality rate although this does not mean that other individuals who suffer from burns do not have risks of mortality. However, even this depends on the percentage of burns. Usually, it was noticed that most burn patients survive the ordeal but they die from shock which results after the burns. The most important emergency response in burns, however, is the resuscitation of the patient and ensuring that the patient fluid balances are maintained. If the patient is not immediately given an IV infusion, the patient continues to loose water from the body and that could be fatal. In the case of Mr. Gershwin, who is 68 and has suffered a 90% body surface burns, he had lost fluids when ambulating (Oliver para. 5).
