As long as a patient has sort medical assistance, the physician is bound legally and ethically to assist the patient. The patient can end the relationship with the physician anytime, but the physician cannot end the relationship unless he is threatened by the patient, the patient is non compliant and if the physician either party is incarcerated (American Medical Association, 2013). Sometimes, retirement, relocation and unanticipated termination by managed care plan are also ways of contract termination. However, the physician has to inform the patient within 30 days and cannot leave the patient before because this will be considered as abandonment (American Medical Association, 2013).
