At Poor Health Risk Group and Vulnerable Populations
Groups at risk of poor health are those people who are likely to suffer death or disability from preventable causes. Some of these preventable risks include childhood and maternal underweight, unsafe sex, high blood pressure, tobacco, alcohol, unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene, high cholesterol, indoor smoke from solid fuels, iron deficiency and overweight/obesity. These risk factors cause 40 percent of the worlds 57 million annual deaths (World Health Organization, 2005). Examples of people of groups at risk of poor health care are infants, pregnant women, smokers and drinkers of alcohol (Shi & Stevens, 2002). These factors are not supposed to cause high dangers of deaths and disabilities but because of lack of necessary preventive measures, the groups find themselves exposed to death or possible disability.
