A community mental health officer is an important person in the community and one who has diverse roles in the community. This is the job I have been doing for the past 12 years and some of the duties that I have been assigned over the years include dealing with cases of alcoholism and drug abuse as well as assisting individuals diagnosed with mental illnesses in the community level. Many people in the society do not understand that mental retardation and some mental conditions are just illnesses which can be effectively managed and many have often locked their loved ones with such conditions which affect their psychological state and sometimes may even lead to worsening of the conditions. I have, dedicated my time in assisting families and caregivers of patients with mental conditions and retardation in dealing with those conditions and improving the quality of life of such individuals. It is, therefore, clear that as a community mental health officer, I have met with people who share many different attitudes and people who have different backgrounds and understanding. All these are reasons which are good enough to have me work as a health visitor because I have prior experience.
