Hand hygiene and health care acquired infection
Poor hand hygiene among healthcare workers and patients is the reason for high rates of transmission of infectious illnesses. This applies to child centers, health care setting, homes, schools and restaurant. Compliance with hand hygiene guidelines is poor and thus hand-mediated transmission remains the main cause of the high infection threats. In health care setting, there is association between workload, high patient load, and understaffing with increased infection rates. Under these circumstances hand hygiene is not given priority hence increasing disease transmission. Health care associated infections are drawing increased attention from governments, insurers, patients and health agencies. Schools have poor compliance to guidelines on hand hygiene increasing transmission risks between students. In hospitals, hands of the health care workers are the main mode of transmission of infectious illness within the health care environment and from one patient to another. Risk of these infections is high in resource-constrained setting as adherence to recommendations for control and prevention is low.
