Critical Analysis
Introduction
It is now two months from the time that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared
a public health emergency of global concern around the Corona Virus 2019. The spread of the
virus from person-to-person led toWHO characterizing it as a pandemic early in the month. The
declaration was made on the backdrop of other pandemics that have had a global impact in recent
years like the Zika in 2016, H1N1 in 2009, Ebola in 2014, among others. Researchers have their
work cut out, trying to know more about the virus that is spreading ever so rapidly. All the states
have recorded cases of COVID-19, and as of the 29th, the total cases of infection stood 122,653,
with 2,112 deaths countrywide (CDC). The global confirmed cases by the same date stood at
more than 634,000, with close to 30,000 deaths (WHO). The article by Mike Davis for The
Nation focuses on the impact of the pandemic by highlighting the most affected communities.
The article acts as a warning of the potential impacts of COVID-19, especially on healthcare
professionals serving at the front line while ill-equipped and poorer economies living in slums in
parts of Africa and South Asia.
The article points out that the global poor have been ignored in the fight even though they
are the ones at greater risk. It relies on information from some of the earliest pandemics, such as
the Spanish flu of 1918. The pandemic is estimated to have killed between 1 and2 percent of the
global population. While the report does bring some interesting facts about the varied impact that
the pandemic would have across the globe, it lacked focus on specific challenges. Instead, the
author highlights several issues that stray from the main discussion on the impact on some

communities and brings out political discussions, the ill-equipped facilities, universal coverage,
democratic candidates, and current leadership. Overall, the article fails to provide valid data and
focus on the core area and purpose, which is warning stakeholders on the impact of the pandemic
as it brings out several issues that stray from the core discussion.
In the article, the author begins by highlighting what he considers as key challenges in the
characterization of the COVID-19. The first is the inadequate supply of test kits that is bound to
affect the containment of the disease leading to chaotic data. Secondly, are the mutations of the
virus across different populations and age groups, which is affecting the distribution and spread
of the virus. Lastly, it is the varied impact across population; in poorer economies, the impact is
expected to be more given the insufficiency in healthcare. The article emphasizes the need to
learn from past experiences like the Spanish-flu pandemic of 1918 and other more recent ones. It
also points out the failures in the national healthcare approaches that could lead to worsening of
the crisis in the country, such as the shortage of hospitals and closure of much needed private
facilities. According to the article, the government is still not doing enough in providing
sufficient help in the form of testing kits; insured still have to dig from their pockets. The impact
will lead to soaring medical bills, and with job losses, no one to pay for the expenses.
The author strays from the core discussion by pointing out the system failures in the
country’s healthcare infrastructure. Focus changes to the lack of commitment by the leadership,
and the article gives an example using the Democratic debate where Sanders and Warren failed
to point out any solid plans they had for the development of treatments. It goes on further to
provide statistics of the number of pharmaceutical companies that have changed their focus to
other types of medications and instead focused on what they consider as more lucrative
treatments focusing on chronic ailments. Vaccines for flu and those targeting immutable parts of

the virus have been thrown to the side considered as being less profitable. The change from
inadequacies healthcare management, supplies in pharmaceuticals, and vaccine development,
however, related to the overall discussion, giving so much focus on those issues, derailed the
discussion.
Another major failure with the report is the lack of sufficient data on the affected
communities like the healthcare workers and those highlighted from more impoverished
communities in Africa and South Asia. It fails to provide credible as well as sufficient data to
back the claims. Instead, the author relies on the historical impacts of the Spanish-flu to provide
a comparative analysis. That line of comparison could have worked if the focus was also on
more recent pandemics and their impact on those communities. The data is provided on
information that is not directly linked to the main discussion, and even then, it does not rely on
factual data or scholarly sources.
Conclusion
The Novel Corona Virus 2019 pandemic is leading to high global infections that have left
several deaths in its wake. The article looks at the impact of the pandemic and some of the
forgotten groups. It points out that Amid all the turmoil, the healthcare personnel that is illequipped, and the poor are bearing the brunt of the crisis. Already the global cases have
surpassed figures from recent pandemics and currently stand at 634,000 with close to 30,000
deaths (WHO). The focus of the report raises some critical issues that should act as a warning.
However, it failed to provide valid data on the most affected groups and instead focused on
government and other stakeholder failures. Overall, the article pointed out critical factors that, if
not adequately addressed, could lead to further negative impacts.
