Paper details

Paper must be typed using 12-pt font and 1 inch margins, and must not exceed three double-spaced typed pages. Please write in essay format, but also indicate which questions you are answering. Use some outside sources (outside the assigned reading), and include a reference sheet for that as well (not counted as part of the three pages). Use mainly information from lectures and assigned reading. Cite readings from the assigned reading using the author of the specific chapter’s last name. If direct quotes are used, signify with quotation marks.
Answer the following questions:
1. Both lecture and readings have aIDressed conflicting conceptions of crime (for ex., commonly held assumptions vs criminological perspectives). Choose one debate about crime we’ve covered so far in the course and A) Briefly explain the perspectives and how they differ, B) Explain the role of empirical data, and C) AIDress why the distinctions between the conceptions matter.
2. Think back to the Carnegie Mellon University incident where fraternity members were arrested for drug law violations. Using two different definitions of crime, state why their behavior either was or was not criminal. According to the labeling theory or Marxist theory definitions of crime, would you conclude that a crime occurred? Why or why not?
3. In the U.S., African American and Latino men are more likely to be victims of violence and to be arrested at higher rates for violent crime than white men. Using research discussed in lecture and course readings, how would you explain these findings.
