teenage son to prepare and make his son mindful of
the realities of being black in America..
C. The meaning of Coates quote The Dreamers
would rather live white than live free to me means that
the Dreamers would rather live the lie of the American
Dream rather than facing the ugly reality of the social
injustices that are going on.
II. Body
A. Paragraph 1
1. The Dream has people blind to the
systemic racism in America and the social injustices
blacks face.
2. All I know is, the violence rose from
fear like smoke from a fire. Coates believes that The
Dream is a destructive force in American society.

people and not as racists.

of theft that enriched them in slavery.
C. Paragraph 3
1. To not dream would have white people
have to face the harsh reality that it is an ugly world
that they created.
2. For white people to wake up from the
dream would have them face how weak they ar to
have oppressed blacks and show how inhumane they
have been towards blacks given their history with
blacks.
III. Conclusion
A. The Dreamers want to stay in the dream which
would have them believe that America is equal to all
and if everyone works hard, everyone of all races can
share the American dream.
B. The Dream is a false reality that fails to
address the social injustices of blacks in America that
was built on the sweat, tears and unequal justice of
blacks at the hands of the privileged whites.
3. What does Coates mean by "the Dream"? Why
does he urge himself to be "wary of every Dream"
(53)? What do you think the author means when
he writes that "the Dreamers...would rather live
white than live free" (143)? Against the Dream, ,
what does it mean to be "conscious citizen[s] of
the terrible world" (108)?
