Microbial mechanisms of pathogenicity – ESSAY 1
Choose one bacterial disease of humans or domestic animals. For this disease you will detail
the five stages of disease: Entry, adhesion, invasion, infection and transmission. You are
especially expected to discuss receptors and mechanisms of adhesion and invasion including
virulence factors. For infection describe the course of disease including signs and symptoms and
the time it takes to move through the phases of disease (if you can find that information). And
finally how the disease is passed to others. If you chose a disease that is viral, eukaryotic or not
caused by a pathogen you will receive a zero (e.g. coronavirus is not a bacterial disease, malaria
is not a bacterial disease, diabetes is not a bacterial disease). The CDC website is a good place to
start if you are stuck please contact me for guidance asap. This is the CDC list of notifiable
diseases, please note that not all of them are bacterial in nature, ask if you are in doubt.

Disease and epidemiology – ESSAY 2
For the disease you described in the first essay, in terms of pathogenicity, describe the
epidemiology and spread. How is it spread from person to person, where does it occur (US or
worldwide), when does it occur (seasonal?), how much does it occur. In which populations does
it occur? What factors of the bacteria influence the epidemiology (eg is it spread by ticks)? What
are the reservoirs of infection, if any? Is it a notifiable disease? Remember this is epidemiology I
want to see numbers, graphs and trends. This is different from the pathogenicity essay. Here you
are talking about who and where not what and how. You are encouraged to include graphs and
figures but must describe the data from them in the text in your own words. If you cannot find
information and want help please do not hesitate to contact me. This is the CDC list of notifiable
diseases, please note that not all of them are bacterial in nature, ask if you are in doubt.

Spillover – ESSAY 3
Choose a spillover disease, one which has emerged from animals and into humans in the past 30
years. It can be any disease. You need to explain the nature of the spillover event in detail.
Where did it come from, what animal/country? What underlying factors facilitated spillover and
spread? How many people were sick? What made the spillover worse? What did we do? What
wasn’t done? What could we do differently next time? Will there be a next time? What are
scientists doing? What could they do next time? Etc.
Give examples, be comprehensive, provide sources.
Not sure whether the disease is a spillover? Ask for assistance.
● Requirements: Introduction, second body paragraph, third paragraph, fourth

still plagiarism.
