Answer the following questions
Who determines membership and how is it determined?
Review the chief differences between the three main branches of Judaism: Orthodox, Reform, and Conservative, and examine some of the groups collected under them. Given their various views of practicing traditions such as the laws of kashrut, are they all legitimately Jewish? What would you say is “Jewish” such that each can claim to be so?
Keep in mind the Board of Rabbis in the state of Israel does not recognize Reform Judaism and Conservative Judaism marriages and conversions, and therefore do not allow them the privileges “official Jews” have in Israel. Make sure you have read the material in the Module about the Chief Rabbinate.
This question concerns religious membership. Is it up to any individual to declare themselves a member of one religion or another, or are there fundamentals in each religion that one must commit to in order to be authentically a member? If “anything goes” in a religion, then what makes it a religion?
