Acute Stress
Introduction
It has long been established that stressful life events can cause both behavioural and emotional effects (Beck & Sloan, 2012). Even though, a big section of the population may be exposed to a traumatic event once in their lifetimes, research has established that most of these people do not develop post-traumatic stress disorder or acute stress disorder. Acute stress disorder (ASD) is a relatively new diagnosis development that attempts to describe posttraumatic stress reactions that take place within the first month after suffering a trauma. Some of the diagnostic criteria include intrusive, dissociative, arousal and avoidance symptoms.
