Ch 5: 1. The ethics of embargoes: Do you think embargoes are ethical?
Answer:
I believe in most cases that embargoes are ethical.
Embargoes are a government order that restricts commerce with a specified country or the
exchange or specific goods. Embargoes tend to be the result of unfavorable political or
economic circumstances between nations.
One of the trade embargoes I found on the Internet is : U.S. Sanctions on Nicaragua: On
July 5, 2018, the U.S. imposed sanctions on three Nicaraguan government officials, in
response to the Nicaraguan government’s treatment of anti-government protesters, which
has led to over 200 people being killed during violent demonstrations. Due to the 2012
Global Magnitsky Act, the U.S. can implement sanctions against those who commit human
rights violations and corruption. The LA Times reported that under the sanctions, “any assets
the three men have in the United States will be frozen, and U.S. citizens are barred from
business transactions with them or any companies in which they have 50 percent or more
ownership.”
I can see why the US chose to do this because of the innocent lives that were taken. As the
US thought Nicaragua committed human rights violations and well as corruption. There are
many instances like this but most tend to be related to the United State’s beliefs.
