You will study an important building in the canon of Western Art, the Parthenon, to learn how a structure can serve religious, political, cultural, or other needs of its creators. Depending on your approach, your paper could consider the Parthenon’s visual elements and style; cultural significance; religious context; political symbolism; and/or its patronage. You will use visual evidence drawn from the object itself, text(s) from the ancient cultures that created and appreciated the building (‘primary sources’), and modern scholarship (‘secondary sources’) to answer the research question in a full, complete manner Final papers should be double-spaced and in a 10-or 12-point font.
