Though Nimitz was aware of the inability to sustain a military advance, Yamamoto was also aware of the inability to advance into Australia or Hawaii. The crux of the matter is that Yamamotos contingency was bereft of forward bases, thus keeping him off the Coral Sea and Midway operations.
