Women’s healthcare is a crucial issue in any part of the world since women make up most part of the world’s population in addition to their reproductive importance. Many women in most part of the world do not have direct access to health care provided by neither the government nor the other stake holders in health. This may be due to lack of finances as many cannot afford medical covers available, long distance, ignorance or personal beliefs. Therefore many cases of women deaths during birth or due to health related issues are on the rise. Women have an added responsibility of taking care of their families’ health issues in addition to making a living i.e. they are mothers, wives and workers which is a great task. They are also disadvantaged in that their income is less than that of men. It is even more difficult for these mothers or wives who are not insured to gain access to an affordable and high quality Medicare (Susan . 2007). Therefore there is need for a health insurance policy that suites poor and disabled women in the world,

Health care policy for women

There are several health care policies for women and these include Medicare, Medicaid and Welfare. Medicaid is a particular current health policy that is designed to address the health care disparities in women. Medicaid is a health coverage program jointly financed by the state and federal government that aims to provide coverage for the poor and low income citizens. It gives more than 21 million low-income women basic health and long-term care coverage. Women are more eligible to receive Medicaid than men since they are poorer thus women form two-thirds of the clients (Kaiser n.d.) Medicaid also covers the family planning services and prenatal services which are essential services in a woman’s life especially during and after birth. Many women in developing countries whoever due to ignorance choose to do away with these services therefore endangering the life of their unborn babies or end up giving birth to more kids than planned or develop cervical cancer. This is due to the fact that many women in these countries are uneducated. Medicaid is thus of great importance to these women. This medical coverage is majorly used by poor and disabled women but have health insurance already (Coughlin Ku & Holahan, 1994, Laplante, Rice & Cyril, 1994)

This medical cover is a policy measure that effectively takes care of women’s health as it covers the most crucial health aspects of women. Throughout their lifespan Medicaid plays a major role in women’s health which comprises reproductive health services, chronic diseases, disability services and as well as medical services that continue with age (Kaiser n.d.). Since it covers the health of women for a long period of time, it is the best policy cover for aging women who are undergoing menopause and other age related issues.

One limitation for this type of medical cover is the fact that although it covers poor women with disparities; it is only applicable to those women who have health insurance as stated by Coughlin Ku, (1994). Therefore those without health insurance are definitely restrained from obtaining it.

The second limitation of this policy is that some women automatically assume that since all medical covers are expensive this is no exception and never bother to know more about the cover. Lack of knowledge is a big barrier to its use as a health care cover.

As this policy covers disabled women, many may have difficulties in accessing health facilities. These barriers include physically inaccessible offices and clinics, lack of educational materials, lack of transportation to the clinics and so fourth.

Lastly there are those women who lack access to health care may be due to financial problems or being too far from the facilities. For these women, this cover has limited use therefore miss out on a great opportunity to have affordable health care.

These limitations can be overcome by health workers educating the public especially women on the importance of having such kind of policy. Due to the complexity of women’s health issues as compared to that of men, women really require this policy but given that some may be uneducated or unaware of it they will definitely not have access to it. It is important for the government to employ health officers who can educate women on its existence.

With Medicaid health policy, the world will be able to control its ever growing number of people due to the family planning services provided. The number of deaths that arise time and again due to complicated birth issues will drastically fall.

Health care for women is very crucial and particularly for women with disabilities since it is an affordable health cover therefore easily accessible.
