‘ What is the role of synaptic plasticity in the cerebellum in motor learning? g? Does all motor learning depend on cerebellar function?’

BMS2011 Extended Essay
Your essay should be chosen from the list of titles that you will be given early in the module.
There is a limit on the number of students who may do each title, and these are available on
a first come first served basis. When you have chosen your title please sign up on Canvas.
On Friday 11th March a PiP or Zoom meeting with the supervisor for your title has been
arranged. Please check the document on Canvas for your allocated venue/Zoom link.
At the meeting the supervisor will provide some initial guidance, but then you should use
the sources available to you to research the topic. Only during the meeting, you should ask
the supervisor questions about the title. Before and after this meeting you can’t contact the
supervisor, and any other lecturer involved in the BMS2011 module about the title you were
allocated.
In this essay we expect you to investigate a topic in depth, going well beyond what you have
covered in lectures. You are expected to reference your essay, using the Vancouver system
(we will also look at this in the seminar lecture).
Whilst you may draw on a wide range of sources of information, please note that much
information on the World Wide Web is aimed at the non-scientist and is not subject to any
sort of quality control. In contrast, papers in scientific journals have been subjected to the
“peer-review” process, in which other scientists have judged the work to be of a suitable
quality for publication. At stage 2 (and even more so when you undertake you project next
year) we expect you to use Medline and draw mainly on scientific journals for your
information, and you will lose marks if you do not.
The essay should be word-processed and will be marked on presentation as well as content.
The word-limit is 2000 words (excluding the references and any labelling, legend of figures).
You should show a word count on your essay.
The essay MUST be written in your own words and fully referenced, and you are advised to
refer to the section on Plagiarism in the Degree Programme Handbook. Please note that
plagiarism is viewed extremely seriously by the University, and disciplinary action will be
taken where plagiarism is detected.
You will be required to submit an electronic version of your essay, which will be scanned
using software for the detection of plagiarism.
