Week 1 Discussion – Working with Clients to Create a Design Campaign

Learning Objectives Covered

  • LO 02.01 – Develop a content strategy that addresses the needs of the target audience
  • LO 05.01 – Identify and discuss five steps of the design process

Career Relevancy

In your career, it is important to understand both the needs of a target audience and the design process. Every campaign message needs to communicate to a target audience. In addition, every campaign message will be created using design process. Understanding the target audience will allow you to cater to a certain demographic and use the design process to build a strong design campaign.

Background

Your classes so far have typically involved personal explorations of taste, for instance utilizing the tools in certain ways to create designs you like, following specific guidelines about what the client wants or freedom to invent what the client wants. In this course that is no longer the case. You must work with a client (your instructor) who has specific tastes and goals already in mind. You will create a successful design campaign which will include multiple projects. These projects will include several different mediums (print, online, social media etc).

Learning and understanding the design process and the steps will help you to develop a strong content strategy which is the roadmap of the entire project. To help you better understand the design process, please first read this short article: https://www.discoverdesign.org/handbook (Links to an external site.)

Furthermore, you must address the needs of the target audience. Doing thorough research about current target market trends and identifying target market wants and needs should be specifically taken into consideration in order to attract attention and convey the message. In order to help you learn more about how to identify your target audience and consider their needs, please read this article: How to Identify Your Target Audience (Links to an external site.)

Prompt

In this discussion, we will begin to explore how to make the most of contact with your clients. In addition, we will discuss the five steps of the design process and how to develop a content strategy based on the needs of the target audience.

Imagine you are meeting with a client for the first time. Together you are going over their design needs and project expectations.

  • What type of questions should you ask a client in order to understand what the goals and needs are for a project?
  • What types of questions might you ask about the target audience and why could these be an important part of developing the design strategy?
  • What are the five steps to the design process and how can you use these steps to develop a strategy based on what you have learned from your client?
  • When working with the client, how can professionalism affect your ability to obtain work and retain clients? What steps can you take to present yourself in a professional manner in all areas of your client communication?

Do research and think about what you need for your creative brief and what you learned in the live session. For your citation, you might use articles on building client relationships, creative briefs and/or the design process/timeline.

Your initial and reply posts should work to develop a group understanding of this topic. Challenge each other. Build on each other. Always be respectful but discuss this and figure it out together.
