University of Southern California Investing and Retirement Discussion Now in a dose of reality, let’s talk about how much money the average American has actually saved for retirement. What do you think we could/should do about the enormous gap between retirement needs and actual retirement savings? What do you think could be done to promote more retirement savings? Do you think Millenials are more likely or less likely to be prepared for retirement than the baby boomers? What do you think will happen as these groups approach retirement age?
Check out this graph of the median amount the average family has saved for retirement. Note that the chart uses the median rather than the mean, or average, because this eliminates the effect of those with zero savings and those who are super-savers.
