1. Describe the relationship between Christopher McCandless and his parents? Why did Chris utterly reject (or did he) the upbringing he had received from them? How is closure between the parents and himself achieved by the parents after his death? Provide examples and cite communication principles from the text.

2. Cite two of the writers or naturalists that Chris referenced or read during his stay in Alaska prior to his death. Why is he so taken by these writer/authors? What is the connection to his road signature Super Tramp?

3. How does Chris feel about civilization in general? What appears to be his motivation to leave it all behind and start afresh? Can you identify with Chris? Why or why not?

Into the Wild is a story about a young man Chris McCandless who just graduated from
Emory University abandons everything he owns including his savings account to live in
the Alaskan wilderness. He was on his way to going to Harvard law school and had
over $24,000 in his savings account but after a graduation dinner with his parents who
offered to buy him a new car he decides to instead get rid of all his belongings give all
the money he has to a charity and set out for freedom.
Chris and his parents seemed to have always had a rocky relationship. His parents
seemed to be all about their materials and cared to much about having the perfect
family and how other people viewed them. Once Chris graduated, he decided he no
longer needed to fill that part of his life. In the film he states that “Money makes
everybody cautious” he did not want to have to depend on money he wanted to survive
strictly off of the wilderness. He believed that his parents on the other hand were living
their life through lies and that they lived off of money and materialistic things. His
parents had an extremely rough relationship, they brought their kids into their
relationship and told them that they were going to get divorced, but they never did. His
parents tried to make them make a decision on who they would choose who to live with.
That cause both of the children to completely shut off of their emotions. Another reason
he did not like his parents was because his father had a completely another family with
another woman. There arguments got so bad that the dad became abusive towards the
mom during fights. The disappearance of Chris actually had a decent effect on his
parents, it brought them together and changed their relationship for the better. Chris’s
sister Carine has written a book called The Wild Truth which she states about how her
brother wrote to her saying that by leaving he was finally going to get his peace and be
rid of his parents for good and start over. “Once the time is right, with one abrupt, swift
action I’m going to completely knock [our parents] out of my life. I’m going to divorce
them as parents… I’ll be through with them once and for all forever.”
(McCandless,2015) The closure that Chris got from his death is finally the peace that he
deserves.
Some of the authors that Chris finds inspiring are Jack London and Henry David
Thoreau. Chris quotes Thoreau’s “Rather than love, then money, then fame, than
fairness, give me truth” which is from Thoreau’s book Walden which is about a man who
spent time apart from society in a cabin in the woods. Chris is so taken by Thoreau
because of the fact that he separated himself from the disgusting society and separated
himself from the outside world. He is also so taken by these authors because in their
work they are just looking for the truth they don’t want to be plagued by societies
darkness and corruption anymore. In The Art of Public Speaking author Stephen Lucas
states that “Public speaking rests on the unspoken assumption that “words can be
trusted and people will be truthful” Without this assumption, there is no basis for
communication, no reason for one person to believe anything that another person
says.”(Lucas,2019a,p31,para3) I use this quote as because in Chris’s diaries he writes
that he just wants the truth he wants everybody to know the truth and experience the
real world not just the materials hiding it. The nickname Alexander Supertramp was
created to show Chris’s new identity and he uses it to burn his past and create a
newfound independence.
Chris believed that our society was sick, and that people are always so evil to one
another. He believed that our society was full of judgement and control. Chris’s
motivation for leaving everything behind was seeing how truly disgusting his parents are
in trying to control him and he wants to disassociate himself from the materialist and
selfish lifestyle they are living. The fact that his father had another family really impacted
the way that Chris viewed his parents. His father made their relationship worse by trying
to control Chris. The fact that his father was controlling made him create a deeper
resentment toward him and his whole life. I can see some of Chris’s points about how
people are controlled by money and how disgusting some people can be with the
lifestyles that they choose to live but there are other ways to go about disassociating
yourself from that type of situation. I believe that Chris had been through a lot of trauma
in his life created by the environment he grew up in and he was never properly taught
how to control his emotions and the only person that would understand him was going
through the exact same thing. He definitely needed professional help and maybe if he
had somebody else to talk to, he could still be alive today.

2- The relationship between Chris and his parents was a difficult one. Chris and his
father’s relationship were never on good terms due to his father’s loyalty, abusiveness,
and their own different outlooks on life. Chris and his father were always on two
opposite ends of the spectrum. But his dad was extremely abusive, constantly beating
Chris, his mom and his sister. Also, while in high school, Chris found out his father was
having an affair with his first wife. This made Chris furious. Pretty much sealing the deal
on the little relationship they had left.
Chris rejected the upbringing he had received from his dad after he found out about his
double life. He felt his best option was to withdraw himself from everyone and isolate.
After Chris dies alone in the wilderness, his parents come to Alaska and go to the
abandoned bus Chris was living in. Chris’s parents see all his belongings and “admit
they are glad they came.” Getting closure by seeing how peaceful and beautiful the path
their son chooses.
Christopher McCandless carried several books when he set off on his final
journey. Including books like “Walden” by Henry David Thoreau, and “The Call of the
Wild” by Jack London. Chris quotes from Walden “Rather than love, than money, than
fame, than fairness, give me truth.” Chris is able to relate first hand to this quote by
Thoreau, being from an abusive father who showed him nothing fair, showed him no
love, and gave him no truth. A father who cheated on his mother, and living through lies,
Chris was able to gain something off these books. The name Supertramp that Chris
gave himself came from who he always wanted to be. I am sure Chris never liked who
he was and how he was treated but maybe just maybe being Alex Supertramp for a little
while was the longest escape he could find. As Supertramp grew on him it was only
because Chris loved tramping he always found it interesting. He not only wanted to be a
“Tramp,” but he wanted to be the best tramper out there which explains the “SUPER”
half of his name.
Chris did not enjoy thinking about civilization, why would he? All he had known
were rules and obligations. He feels almost shunned from civilization after what it has
done to him, causing himself to want to change everything about himself. His motivation
to start fresh is his only way to escape the grasp of civilization. I cannot identify with
Chris knowing that you have to be grateful for what you have.
