EIND 313 Laboratory #6-8, Predetermined
Time Systems (PTS) and Learning Curves
1. Preparation for PTS – assess the assembly process of U-bolts (also known as rope
clips)
a. Watch the 3 videos provided of the U-bolt assembly tasks.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1kzKhzyMOrEKj6Aumml_jxyKKMib3GEJ
i. U-bolts without a fixture
ii. U-bolts with fixtures
iii. U-bolts alternate abilities
b. Compare and contrast (1 page of text) the assemblies across abilities and
fixtures. Your observations only at this point. Save this text for final report.
c. Create 3 operation process charts.
i. Assembly without a fixture (video i)
ii. Assembly with 1 fixture (video ii)
iii. Assembly with 2 fixtures (video ii)
d. Create 3 LH/RH / two-hand process charts for the same assemblies in 1c above.
i. Assembly without a fixture (video i)
ii. Assembly with 1 fixture (video ii)
iii. Assembly with 2 fixtures (video ii)
e. Now evaluate the job and the workstation identifying both good and bad
features. You will evaluate the same 3 assemblies chosen above.
i. If a good feature, indicate the principle of work design that justifies its
use.
ii. If a bad feature, redesign that feature, using a principle of work design to
justify the change.
iii. Be thorough and concise. Use the tables below on page 2. You will
complete 2 tables. You may combine the assemblies using 1 and 2
fixtures into a single table.

f. Summarize all key findings (akin to you results section) from these analyses.
~2 pages. Save this text for your final report.
**STOP** Parts 2 and 3 completed during final Lab meeting April 14.
2. Assess the assembly process of U-bolts using MTM-2 Methods Analysis (without
fixture, single fixture and double fixture – 3 analyses).
3. Assess the assembly process of U-bolts using BasicMOST Methods Analysis
(without fixture, single fixture and double fixture – 3 analyses).
**STOP** Check your answers for Parts 2 and 3 with instructor.
4. Compare and contrast results for MTM-2 and BasisMOST.
Use the table and write a narrative of your methods and results. Be sure to include in
your final calculated times a standard allowance of 10%.

5. PTS Discussion. Include a discussion of whether or not MTM-2 and BasicMOST
should have or should not have been used for this analysis as well as sources of error.
Narrative should be ~1 page.
6. Learning Curves.
a. Using the table below compute the learning curves. For all known data include
in the table and calculate all other values for each of the following:
i. Adult assembly without a fixture (video i)
Estimated Learning Curve (%):____________
ii. Adult assembly with 1 fixture (video ii)
Estimated Learning Curve (%):____________
iii. Adult assembly with 2 fixtures (video ii)

iv. Child assembly – female (video iii)

v. Child assembly – male (video iii)

b. Plot each of 5 assemblies noting the learning curve on the figure/chart using a
legend (for example 55% learning curve – male child).
c. Now plot each of the 5 assemblies note the learning cureve on the figure/chart
using a legend but use the log (x) and the log (y).
i. Discuss what changed from b to c and why this alternative plot may be
helpful. 1 paragraph.
d. A learning curve is a plot of proxy measures for implied learning
(proficiency or progression toward a limit) with experience. Discuss your
overall findings (a-c) and implications of this learning curve analysis. Provide
possible applications (internal, external and strategic) of your learning curve
analysis. Hint: use the extra learning curve module posted in D2L. Half page of
text.
Technical Report
• Submit a Full, Formal Technical Report that includes all of your analyses from above
but also includes any pertinent information from the previous labs for Attainment
Company. You may submit your full report as a firm or individually.
Attainment Company, Inc. is an independent, family-owned business based in
Verona, Wisconsin. The founder and CEO, Don Bastian, has led the company for
