Importance of the Individual – the idea that each person is unique and has unlimited potential for self-development and for good; the idea that each person not only can achieve greatness, but also can inspire others and influence society for the better, as well
Non-conformity – the importance of thinking about what is right, rather than simply following the crowd; the importance of acting according to one’s own conscience, rather than ignoring or allowing injustice—or worse, being a cog in a machine perpetuating injustice
Influence of Nature – the idea that Nature is a source of creation, inspiration, and healing; the idea that humanity is intricately connected to Nature because we were both created by the same divine source; the notion that we can better understand ourselves through understanding Nature

Note: While American Romanticism also features two of the ideas listed above, from reading the descriptions, you should see that Transcendentalism utilizes the “Importance of the Individual” and the “Influence of Nature” in different ways than the American Romantic literary movement.
