WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Won’t Hear Arizona Appeal on Abortion Ban. “The
Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from Arizona officials seeking to revive a state law
that barred most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The justices offered no reasons for
turning down the appeal, as is their custom.”
“The case concerned an Arizona law, enacted in 2012, that prohibits abortions, except in
certain medical emergencies, when the fetus reaches 20 weeks gestation, dated from the
woman’s last menstrual period. The law’s definition of medical emergency is narrow,
encompassing conditions requiring an immediate abortion to avert a pregnant woman’s death or
a “serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function.”
I do not believe men should have the right to vote on issues concerning the human female
reproduction system, therefore any form of mass media that includes a man’s intrusion or
opinion is wrong. It is purely about control and dominating women. As a country we have been
fighting about this for a long time, and will continue to do so until intelligent men understand the
importance of bowing out of this subject. Battles are being fought in many states, and the socalled pro-lifers claim they are concerned about fetuses can feel pain at 20 weeks. They do not
have a solution about how to take care of that child’s pain after birth. They contain to find loop
holes to maintain control of women, and one of the latest “schemes (litigation) is requiring
doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at hospitals and limiting coverage to
abortion procedures in health plans or the use of medications to end pregnancies.” I am angered

by the fact that individuals attempt to use religion as their excuse. Illegalization of abortion will
cause more harm to human life for the woman, an unborn fetus an unwanted infant. Raising two
children of my own I understand that being a parent is a lifetime commitment, not a commit that
ends when the child turns eighteen years old. Often, the toughest time is from the point of their
teenage years and older.
Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona is a major pro-life supporter, but I believe Brewer’s time is running
out. Arizona officials conceded that the law covered abortions before fetal viability, currently
about 24 weeks as measured from a woman’s last menstrual period. But they argued that the law
did not amount to an outright ban, only to a permissible regulation, one they said was justified by
the state’s interest in preventing fetal pain and the increased risk to women as their pregnancies
progress. The appeals court rejected both arguments.
“Judge Kleinfel said “Were the statute limited to protecting fetuses from unnecessary
infliction of excruciating pain before their death, Arizona might regulate abortions at or after 20
weeks by requiring anesthetization of the fetuses about to be killed, much as it requires
anesthetization of prisoners prior to killing them when the death penalty is carried out.”
Arizona is one of 12 states that have tried to ban most abortions at 20 weeks based on the theory
of fetal pain, according to the Guttmacher Institute. But the other states have set the threshold at
20 weeks after fertilization, about two weeks later in a pregnancy than Arizona’s cutoff, but still
earlier than fetal viability. Such laws have been struck down in Georgia and Idaho but remain in
effect in nine states where they have not been challenged in court.
“In urging the court to hear the Arizona case, Horne v. Isaacson, No. 13-402, officials
there told the justices that the small number of challenges was an effort by abortion rights

advocates to make sure there was no split among the lower courts, a factor that often figures in
the Supreme Court’s decision to hear a case.”

More information is coming out about Governor Chris Christie and his involvement in
the bridge scandal. I’m not surprised that the governor could be involved because on a number
of occasions I found him to be unbelievable. I’m waiting to hear more facts but it seems as if his
strong-arm attacks on others have been unusually harsh towards the media and public. The
stacks for him are high and the fact that one of his friends was given a job that he wasn’t
qualified for makes me suspicious to learn more. We still don’t know what he knows and when
he knew it because he won’t answer that question. I happen to believe that Chris Christie has
bullied so many people for such a long time that he has gotten careless. The people affected by
his revenge are still unknown, but as time passes the facts will be revealed. Politics are almost
always nasty, but Christie seems to be more mob like than political savy. Personally, I believe
he has gotten himself into a scandal his supporters will leave his side. If it was not such a serious
violation of corruption it would be humorous to see him and his hateful co-workers loss their
jobs and be fined, and/or do jail time. None of them showed compassion for the citizens and
were concerned only with revenge.

Wendy Davis’ life story more complicated than compelling narrative. Wendy Davis is
learning how to better navigate with the media when it comes to her narrative and personal life.
She expresses this in her interview with the Dallas Morning News. I believe that the national
spot light is on her as she begins her run for Texas Governor this is only the beginning of many
attacks. She likely gave certain personal information about her past and then was forced to

clarify details the media perceived to be dishonest. If I was asked to recall my exact timeline
when I married for the first time, got pregnant, divorced and provide other details it’s likely I
would not provide accurate details without taking a little time to go over my timeline. I am a
supporter of Wendy Davis, and look forward to Rick Perry’s tenure as Governor ending. The
typical, Texan, cowboy image will eventually disappear with all the beautiful individuals moving
to Texas. I do have concerns about Wendy Davis because she will be attacked relentlessly, but
since her and I are similar in age my guess is she’s in it for the long, hard run.

Rand Paul is one of the scariest politicians I have listened to, but the bar is set so low
nothing they say surprises me anymore. Rand Paul believes that the women in his family
represent the average woman in American according to his interview. Not only is he out of
touch with women in general he is out of touch with the women in his family. It’s apparent he
believes that he can use the women in his family to represent all women, but that is his biggest
mistaken. Women are different and have different experiences based on their cultural, religious
beliefs, economic status, sexual preference, etc. He makes too many assumptions about women,
but I like it when he talks crazy because it makes people more aware of the fast talking, empty
souled politicians. Women are becoming more aware of oppression and men like Rand Paul help
us in our fight to overcome obstacles if women are listening closely. However, that it where our
biggest obstacle is…women are busy and too often do not have the time to read, watch or listen
to news but the one’s that do are the women that will lead our way out of oppression and
inequality.

Rep. Michael Grimm attacked and threatened to kill the journalist that attempted to
interview him about Rep. Grimm’s alleged misuse of campaign funds. So far, the consequences
of Rep. Grimm’s threats and actions have not been seen. Media coverage is not consequences
enough. Rep. Grimm is an example of exactly what’s wrong with politics and more specifically
the face of the Republican Party. He is a self-righteous, bully who got caught on television.
Hopefully, we will see him disappear from the political area completely. So far, I have not read
anything of substance that would serve as proof that Rep. Grimm has much more to offer than
future temper tantrums. Fortunately, the journalist that was attacked was not hurt and he seemed
to take the temper tantrum directed at him in stride. This says a lot of the journalist, but even
more about Rep. Grimm. If the journalist had made a big deal out of the attack he would have
drawn attention to himself, but instead he wisely allowed all the attention to be focused on Rep.
Grimm.
Rep. Grimm continues to demonstrate his temperament and thin skin which is not strong
characteristics for today’s politician. It is refreshing to hear journalists bring light to the
unprofessional politicians, but personally I do not like a lot of negative news but always
appreciate when journalists turn the spotlight on dishonest politicians. The public must be made
aware of the people we are paying to represent our interests.

The segment discussed whether or not the attacks against Wendy Davis’ narrative are
sexist or gender discrimination. The discussion was about her narrative and some of the facts
being inaccurate, such as her age, how long she lived in a trailer and how her college loans were
paid. Some of the questions that were discussed began with, is she a bad mom because her exhusband had custody of their daughter while she went to college? Is she being attacked because

her current husband paid for part of her education? They discussed was she not single-mom
enough? Is she not feminist enough? Was she married & divorced at 19 or 21? One of the
guests stated gender discrimination is a cognitive hook. Guest Kelly Dittman, said “is she a bad
mom or single mom enough? Is she feminist enough?” Contrasted with Kerry & Mark Orubio
story – not man enough, not soldier enough? To compare and contrast, the host used John Kerry
and Mark Rubio and their narratives being attacked. The panel demonstrated that when you’re
running for a high-level government position you are prone to be attacked. One of the guests,
Jonathan Capehart stated “they like to take your strengths and knee cap with it.” He also used
Gewt Gingrich as an example of a man who allowed his wife to pay for this education and then
later left her for another woman but he’s a man and that is okay. Another guest, Laura Flanders
pointed out that when you “put the weight on a narrative they have an appetite for it.” “Appetite.
Attitudes expressed in our policy with women running for office.” Guest Beth Fohouy. The host
and panel discussed whether or not Wendy Davis is being portrayed as a bad mom because her
ex-husband had custody of their children while she attended college. Wendy Davis is being
attacked with sexist undertones, but I agree with the shows panel that she can handle herself.
When running for public office it’s typical to hear attacks come from the opposition. We have
more important battles to fight.

Political Turmoil In Ukraine Spreads Outside Capital Kiev. Turmoil began to spread
when the country’s president refused to sign a trade deal with the European Union under
pressure from neighbor Russia. Protests are spreading and calling for the president to step down.
Protestors claim that there are more people who are against the president that have been afraid to
step forward. The people are demanding an end to government corruption, to free political

prisoners, and to be aligned with the European Union and not Russia. Protestors have taken over
government buildings such as the Justice Ministry building. If the protestors don’t leave they
will attempt to enact a state of emergency to force them out. Some protestors have already been
killed. President ran a new law through parliament banning civic type of protests. The
opposition wants the law repealed not changed. Most of the protesters are middle class people
made up largely of women and younger people. The day of the funeral of one of their 25 year
old leaders they cancelled the protests and stood in silence. The President is considering
changing the law and granting amnesty for the protestors. Apparently, parliament will not be
able to resolve issues peacefully, so the best chance will be between the President and the
protestors. It’s difficult to figure out the details in another country when we have a difficult time
determining who the good and bad politicians are in the U.S. However, with women and young
protestors my guess is the opposition is fighting for the middle class, such as we are here. (2014,

Morley, Safer, contributor. (2014, January 26). “Yearup,” CBS 60 Minutes.
Gerald Chertavian created year-long jobs creating bootcamp for some of the country’s
most disadvantage young people. So far thousands of young people are working at jobs with
good solid companies like JPMorgan and Facebook, and CEO’s are finding out that they can do
well by also doing well. Crash courses at corporate boot camp are offered and they will learn
together, and overcome generations of poverty. This is an excellent program and something we
should promote and support as part of our future. They learn business and technical skills and
also important social skills. They are also taught how to write resumes and interview. They
learn to work to build a career. These young people have worked hard to overcome poverty,
drugs, foster care, women’s shelters, and other obstacles. They have found that there is untapped
resources in communities where young people haven’t been given the opportunity or exposure to
get a good job, but they are motivated, willing and capable. Perception changes need to be able
so that these people are no longer invisible. Chertavian began “Yearup” with his own money.
He saw firsthand the unfairness of young people who had not been given opportunities, and he
helped a young man through college prior to starting “Yearup.” He began with just twenty-two
students where he created a year-long job bootcamp that provides a pathway to good careers for

young people who would otherwise never get the chance. The formula is simple, for six months
students choose to concrete on trading financial operations or more often computer technology.
These two area of concentrations can provide livable wages, and earn a career. President Obama
visited the Washington site and the White House is looking for ways to duplicate the formula of
“Yearup.” At first Chertavian had to beg companies to offer internships. Now, companies like
JPMorgan are paying “Yearup” $23,000 a year per intern. JPMorgan has taken on 300 interns so
far and it’s been a success. “Yearup” gives students six months of intensive training so when
they start a job they are well prepared. The investment has paid off for JPMorgan because the
program and students are enlightened and become good permanent full-time employees.
Another aspect students learn is networking and social skills. Chertavian said, “You hire
for skills and fire for behavior, so that’s one of the most important parts of the program.” There
are social codes and social norms they must learn to survive in a career at a good company. Each
candidate’s application is reviewed thoroughly and their determination is important. The only
requirement is a high school diploma or GED. “Yearup” has twelve sites across the country and
teaching two-thousand students in financial operations and computer technology. After
graduation twenty-five percentage go to college or are hired full-time. Average starting salaries
are $30,000 but with computer technology expertise salaries can increase up to $50,000 or more.
They earn money, and get college credits. Chertavian is filling a gap in the economy and
hopefully these programs will be available in every community. Everyone does not want to
work on Wall Street or in the city, but there are lots of good paying jobs available if we make the
effort to help give people an opportunity. We need programs for all ages and not just young
people. As people get older many can no longer perform physical jobs like they did when they
were younger, but they still need to support themselves. The program has demonstrated

measurable success, and the business community can help organize this same program.

Students to Internet. Digital Divide and AT&T and MicroSoft helping. The President and the
Secretary of the Department of Education are trying to work with Congress for reauthorization. I
was excited to hear about these efforts because so many children in school do not have access to
computers, therefore they will lack the skills to continue their education. However, with our
congress it is unlikely that they be willing to cooperate, but I do hope our Department of
Education will continue to work on this important program. I have three granddaughters and
they have access to the internet which is critical because some schools require first grade
students to complete their homework online. For example, my six year old niece has twenty
minutes of online homework each night. Access for all the children in our family is critical, but
what about the parents who cannot afford internet expenses. Children should not have to miss
educational opportunities for any reason, and it is the best way to change poverty for every
generation.
