Troy University Othello by William Shakespeare Drama Analysis Essay After reading Shakespeare’s Othello, review the questions at the end of the text and the checklist for Writing Effectively in your text.

Under the Topics for Writing on Shakespeare on p. 892, choose one of the first four questions as the topic for your paper (you may not write about #5 because we did not read the other play).

Regardless of which topic you choose, you must include detailed evidence from the text to support your points.

Remember that you must have a strong thesis and provide analysis, not simply summary, as you respond to the question you have chosen.

Your paper must be a minimum of 3 full pages presented in MLA format.

1. Write a defense of lago.
2. “Never was any play fraught, like this of Othello, with improbabilities,” wrote
Thomas Rymer in a famous attack (A Short View of Tragedy, 1692). Consider
Rymer’s objection to the play, either answering it or finding evidence to back
it up
3. Suppose yourself a casting director assigned to a film version of Othello. What
well-known actors would you cast in the principal roles? Write a report justifying
your choices. Don’t merely discuss the stars and their qualifications; discuss (with
specific reference to the play) what Shakespeare appears to call for.
4. Emilia’s long speech at the end of Act IV (iii, 84–103) has been called a Renais-
sance plea for women’s rights. Do you agree? Write a brief, close analysis of this
speech. How timely is it?
5. “The downfall of Oedipus is the work of the gods; the downfall of Othello is self-
inflicted.” Test this comment with reference to the two plays, and report your
findings.
