The Use of Re-Infusion Drains in the Surgical Setting
Transfusion of blood provides a means of increasing the blood oxygen capacities. However, this has associated inherent risks and complications. Risks of transmission of viruses via allogeneic blood transfusion have been reduced to low and safe levels. However, transfusion-associated acute lung injuries are associable with blood transfusion; haemolytic transfusion reactions are also common with blood transfusion. Another risk includes transfusion related sepsis, which is considered as among the leading causes of allogeneic blood transfusion associated deaths. AIDitionally, the association between the use of blood transfusion for transfusion of non-leucoreduced red blood cells and the associated mortality is detectible in surgery such as cardiac surgery (Moonen, Knoors, & van Os, 2007).
