The Progression and Events of the American Government Taking the Sioux Indians Reservation -Black Hill Gold
The Black Hills that are found in Dakota are of sacred significance to the Sioux Indians. The 1868 Sioux Treaty which was signed mainly in Fort Laramie among other military posts found within the Sioux country signified the recognition of the Black Hills by the US government as part and parcel of the Great Sioux Reservation. This reservation was set aside and intended for the use by the Sioux people exclusively[1]. However, this treaty was soon to be dishonored when General George A. Cluster invaded the Black Hills through an expedition that was prospecting for gold. This expedition did find gold in the Black Hills and although it was supposed to be an exclusive place for he Sioux people, this soon changed. A galore and rush for gold ensued which saw the influx of miners who demanded protection from the US government which had signed a treaty earlier with the Sioux people. Soon the US army was asked to guard the miners and this led to some confrontation which would last for years. In the year 1876, General Custer who was leading an army detachment encountered Cheyenne and Sioux Indians at the Little Bighorn River which resulted in the annihilation of the detachment. This unfortunate event led to a campaign by the US government to recapture the Black Hills which it did in 1877[2].
