This paper takes a look at Wright and McMahan (1992), article drawing on Barneys (1991) resource-based theory of the firm that contends that human resources can provide a source of sustained competitive advantage when four basic requirements are met. These include, firstly, the human resources must have and aID a positive value to the firm; secondly, the resources must be distinct and unique and cannot be accessed by the competitors, this means that the firm will stay ahead of the competitors in developing new strategies; thirdly, they must be imperfectly imitable; and fourth they must not be substituted for any other resource by the competitors (Wright & McMahan 1992).
