For this assignment, you will write a 3-4 page argumentative essay (at least 1000
words) that expands on the topic you have chosen and explored in the discussion
posts for this unit (Remember, the topic must connect to our course theme: Race,
Class, and Gender in the United States). Your paper should be formatted using MLA
and include a topic, thesis statement, and at least three valid and reliable sources that
are discussed and cited in the actual paper. Your research will also benefit from the
wealth of information found in Rutgers’ expansive database. I highly recommend that
you use the databases’ resources to your advantage—not to validate what you have to
say, but to see how your argument fits in ongoing academic discussions and perhaps
to spark new ideas for your argument.
Begin with an introduction and thesis that demonstrates the importance and relevance
of the topic. After visiting and acknowledging alternative and opposing viewpoints to
show the complexity of the issue and your empathy as a speaker, you will need to
establish your credibility and expertise by showing what research has already been
conducted, and how what you have to say both builds and differentiates from prior
arguments. Your article will finally build toward its climax—what it is you have to say
and what it is you want out of your audience. The best essays will answer the everdaunting “So what?/Now what?” questions that require real risk-taking and ingenuity.
For this assignment, you may use first person and use personal experience to establish
why you are a credible and authoritative speaker (Note: Personal experience should
not be used as evidence to make broad generalizations but may be communicated as
particular, somewhat situation-specific information).
When writing the paper, consider the following:
• Is the introduction quick and effective?
• Does the introduction provide a brief overview of the rest of the argument and
build toward a solid, well-constructed and elaborate thesis statement?
• Are you demonstrating the complexity of the issue/topic by empathetically
presenting opposing viewpoints in a respectful and unbiased way?
• Are you building upon sources or merely using them to validate, confirm, or justify
your argument?
• Do you answer the “So what?/Now what?” questions each audience might pose?
• Do you incorporate at least three outside sources found in the Rutgers’ database or
online (Remember to use valid and reliable sources)?
• Did you carefully choose a topic and stance that is complex, relevant, and important
enough to engage an audience of your academic peers?
• Do you present new and interesting information and a creative, original argument or
are you simply stating something “safe”—something readers already know and believe
in?
• Are you using research throughout the paper?
• Are you saying something new that the research has not?
• Does your argument align with one of the three main types of arguments: Toulmin,
Aristotelian, or Rogerian, and include a claim, warrant, and evidence?
