The Cold War and US Diplomacy The Reagan Doctrine
THE REAGAN DOCTRINE IN NICARAGUA
Disturbed by what was regarded as the Soviet advances in Central Asia, Africa and Central America, the right-wing group which was surrounding President Ronald Reagan engaged in renewing the notion for dealing with communism, and this came to be referred to as the Reagan Doctrine (The Reagan Doctrine, 2013).This doctrine, which was the focus of the United States of Americas foreign policy in the course of the 1980s, was established on the basis of the idea of combating communism and ensuring promotion of capitalism in foreign countries by supporting anti-communism, rebellious guerrilla armies within the developing nations. The Sandinistas, who were Marxist rebels, engaged in overthrowing the brutal and corrupt Somoza regime within Nicaragua in the year 1979, giving the Reagan Doctrine a tough test (The Regan Doctrine and Nicaragua, n.d).
