Information Literacy Reflection Assignment #2

Information has value. This assignment asks you to reflect on the value to you of the
information presented this semester in your readings and classroom work. Was any of the
information we covered of personal importance to you? What information specifically was
valuable and why did it matter to you? This assignment does not ask you to convey what
substantive material you learned. Rather, the focus must be on explaining in personal terms why
this substantive material had value to you specifically. Please remember that although we
emphasized various aspects of the American criminal justice system, we looked at the concept of
“Justice” in a variety of ways, more general and philosophical, and even considered the hypothesis
that injustice occurs not because of inherent structural problems with the legal “system” but
because of the flaws and frailties and biases of the individuals who make up that system.
Consider one or more of the following ideas:
? Did the course information have any effect on your own personal code of conduct and
value system?
? Did the course information help you to understand the importance to maintaining a
functioning democracy of having an educated citizenry, and is that important to you?
? Is there anything we addressed that encouraged you to make any changes in your life?
? Did the course information clarify for you what kinds of beliefs and morals you think are
important in your choice of friends, future spouse or life partner or how you want to raise
your children?
Your paper should be two full double-spaced typewritten pages.
This is the second of two information literacy assignments, each counting 5% of your final grade.
There are no wrong answers, so you should feel invited to express yourselves freely. You are not
being assessed on the correctness of your opinions or experiences. You are being assessed on the
seriousness of your effort and the thought that you put into this. Originality, depth of thought,
honesty, a willingness to stretch are what count. Please also refrain from assessing my performance
as the teacher or commenting on my teaching style. Stick to the information, the content, the
substance of what we covered and why that had value for you personally.

Information Literacy Reflection Assignment #1
The first day of class we learned one of themes for this course that we would be looking
at throughout the semester. Which is to consider the American criminal justice system as a good
system that promotes values. However, the regular injustices we see are not in the fault of the
system but in the fault of the people who implement it like our judges, police officers,
prosecutors, defense lawyers, correctional officers, and jurors. Hearing this really made me think
about how true that is. There are many times I have heard people say, “The system is flawed”,
“The system is corrupt”, “The system is unfair or unjust”. Everyone is so quick to blame the
“system”. While I have always had an opinion that there are unsettling problems with our legal
system it made me understand that it is not the system itself. Rather the people in control of the
legal system carrying out these decisions of who is sent to prison, and who walks free. So far, I
have learned that personal backgrounds, biases about race, gender and appearance, play a more
important role in the outcome of a person’s life than the actual law does. Although our country
has come a long way yet problems like these still exist.
This had me thinking about what could we do to change this, or how do you change
someone’s bias opinion especially those who hold power. More broadly, we need to think about
as a society how to get rid of damaging racial associations because I believe this is the biggest
issue. Secondly, we need to think about ways to establish a more diverse judicial branch. If the
majority of our court system shares the same bias views that is one of the worst things we could

do. It’s much better if everyone is biased in different ways. It’s hard to change someone’s
opinions that have been set in stone over the years but adding more diversity is the next best
approach.
We discussed the play Antigone and some of the ideas of Socrates and Plato. At first, I
didn’t really understand the importance of reading this for our class since it seemed to be
something we would look at in intellectual heritage rather than criminal justice. I do not favor
philosophical approaches to learning something, it makes it harder or more confusing to
understand. I know justice plays a key role in Antigone because each character’s perception of
justice serves to understand the reason for their actions. But after we talked about what makes up
a just or unjust leader and citizen in society the two topics made a little more sense together.
This made me reflect on some of the leaders I know of today and past leaders. What if
someone has many just qualities but continues to make unjust decisions? Or is a citizen
considered “unjust” in society after making a bad decision but still having multiple “just”
characteristics or qualities? I think you can be an unjust person but still take on certain just
qualities vice versa. So how do you distinguish a just or unjust person? In essence, I feel as
though yes, the idea of just and unjust is subjective. People create a perspective on this based on
their own personal experiences and upbringing, people look at a situation and decide whether
what occurred is right or wrong. Throughout history society has decided what is just and what is
unjust and that is how it has been determined.
Overall, the last five classes I think I have learned a little more than just about what we
talked in the classroom. It made me think a little deeper about the problems the people in our
legal system are making and what we could possibly do to solve them but, also the bias
opinions of people in power are damaging if there is not enough diversity in power.
