Sterilization
Sterilization refers to a means through which harmful or pathogenic microbial activity is eliminated for the purposes of avoiding contamination or infection. The art of sterilization goes way back in history when people used to use salt as a meat preservative. As man advanced in science and technology, new ways of sterilization were invented especially with regards to medicine practice. Things went a notch higher when autoclaves were developed which could sterilize medical equipment and hence reduce mortality rates of patients after surgery. Afterwards, things have evolved and currently there are many forms and different ways of sterilization. Some employ electromagnetic waves, dry heat and other use chemicals (American Public Health Association, 2001).
