Your principal (you’re a teacher) has asked you to develop materials for your fellow educators to explain the different types of communications parents and families can expect to receive from the school and how those communications will be used to support family engagement and involvement.

Complete Parts 1 and 2 below.

Part 1

Develop a 400- to 525-word plan outlining how you will communicate with families of exceptional learners and support active family engagement in their student’s school experiences.

Address the following critical aspects in your plan:

1. Routine Communication

2. What types of daily, weekly, and monthly communication do you plan to have with the family?

3. Home–School Connection

4. What are some routine (e.g., weekly, biweekly, monthly) procedures and/or activities that families can support their students with at home to strengthen the home–school connection?

5. What type of guidance could you provide to parents and families to support their participation in these activities?

6. Cultural Differences

7. What are some cultural differences that may affect the learner and communication with his or her family?

8. How will you proactively address these cultural differences?

9. Language Barriers

10. What are some strategies you will use to communicate with and strengthen the parent–school partnership with families that do not speak or read English?

Part 2

Develop a brochure, using Brochure Builder or another tool of your choice, about how your school inclusively addresses cultural and learning differences.

Address the following questions in your brochure:

11. How do you reach out to families?

12. How do you explain special education to families of English learners?

13. How do you meet the needs of exceptional learners in inclusive settings?

14. What are some ways that families can support learners at home and at school?

15. How are special needs and cultural differences addressed in specific school and classroom activities, such as assessment, instruction, and collaborative activities?
